Today’s update expands on your Profile Privacy Settings Page, giving you more control over the privacy of your Steam account. With more detailed descriptions of what profile information is included in each category, you will be able to manage how you are viewed by your friends, or the wider Steam Community.
You can now select who can view your profile’s “game details”; which includes the list of games you have purchased or wishlisted, along with achievements and playtime. This setting also controls whether you’re seen as “in-game” and the title of the game you are playing.
Additionally, regardless of which setting you choose for your profile’s game details, you now have the option to keep your total game playtime private. You no longer need to nervously laugh it off as a bug when your friends notice the 4,000+ hours you've put into Ricochet.
Looking ahead a little, we are also working on a new “invisible” mode in addition to the already existing “online”, “away” and “offline” presence options. If you choose to set yourself to invisible, you’ll appear as offline, but you’ll still be able to view your friends list, send and receive messages. Sometimes you’re feeling social, and sometimes you’re not; this setting should help Steam users be social on their own terms. We hope to have this feature ready for beta release soon.

More sites that can't work or will have reduced functionality now, source (also the Ricochet plug in the announcement is weird)

And probably a few hundred more I'm unaware of.
Probably because I made fun of one of my friends for buying Kanojo vr
Finally I can leave the rest of my games and block people from seeing my 7000+ hours of Garrys mod
The only thing now that I'd like to see is an option to make profile comments viewable to friends only, not just posting rights.
took long enough to get an "Invisible" mode
Kinda sucks but he was probably aware that any data scraping website is always at the mercy of the changes.
Seen this happen with other statistic sites for other games, thats kinda the danger of it.
Oddly, I never understood while the profiles are private regardless. Viewable to friends only, perfect sense weeds out bots, nobody can post comments, again makes perfect sense with all the dumb copy-paste. But why on earth do you need to have a private steam profile to your friends? It bugs me to no end to not see who else I'm friends with if we have dozens of people in common or what games they have so we could play together. Makes it seem like they have something to explicitly to hide IE here are my 100 games or stupid comments on my page.
You can't judge reviews based on playtime anymore
cool
that's nice and all but how about giving me the simple ability to not allow people to send me group invites unless they're already a friend, or to only receive friend/group invites from people that are friends of friends. Or hell, just disable receiving both entirely lol. I get goofy russian scammers trying to add me on a daily basis as is and am currently up to 500+ blocked steam accounts since I just block any random people trying to add me at this point.
but yeah anyways that sucks about steamspy. I liked looking up stats on there for indie games a fuck ton to see how well they were doing. RIP
The new option is good to have but its dumb they're on by default considering it's going to mess with genuinely useful sites like steamdb.
It'd be nice if the feature to disable being seen as "in-game" was separate from having friends being able to see anything at all about game details

can we talk about how fucking great this is though
Hope they'll add in an option to hide certain games instead of it just being all or nothing. Either way this is great update and I'm happy it finally came.
about time, tired of getting msgs from bots saying "I WON 500 CS_GO KEYS ON THIS WEBSITE WWW.NOTABOTFUCKMYBIGASS.RU !!!!11!1! xD".
or scammers asking about my extremely rare unusual courier on dota2.
Now give me a setting that lets me automatically reject the invite of anyone that posts "added for trade" on my profile and sends them a message saying "my profile explicitly says I'm not selling anything you illiterate twat".
I disagree with being able to view people's games defaulted to friends only. I think people should be able to set that themselves if they want to do so. This also makes it harder to know who's scamming you outright as scammers tend to buy tons of cheap games to look legit, only to fuck you right in the ass later. That, and it screws with the tons of websites as mentioned in the OP. I do like the Invisible mode though, it's been long overdue.

This should have been added long ago. Just because I don't want people pestering me during a game doesn't mean I don't want to be able to message anybody at all. It just means people have an infuriating habit of seeing me go into a game and getting the weird as hell idea that that somehow means I want to talk rather than, y'know, play the fucking game I just started up. (Same sort of reason I'm always set away on Steam too, not that that helps either.)
Am I the only one who still got messages despite being set as offline.
Anyway new Invisible mode is god like.
Though I will find myself toggling to hide "I am playing X" dependant on which game,
I assume if I hide what I play, friends won't be able to quickjoin which would suck in some scenarios.
I can't speak for everyone since I know Steam's statuses have some weird inconsistencies for some people (for example if Steam disconnects for me at all I get put back online in online status no matter what but I know people who can have their internet drop out or close out of Steam and come back online in their previously set status) but for me I just get the typical offline messages notification that you'd normally get while Steam is closed and you log back on. And it was rather glitchy too because I had to close the chat tab ebfore clicking the notification or else it would just dismiss the notification.
On bright side you can still add some game as your favourite one and people cans till see how big of a fuck up you are.
i show off my power level using my bio and the badge and game collector showcases
Ten damn years we've been asking for this. Ten damn years!

Fuck that makes me so happy. Hard to believe I was freshly playing TF2 and bemoaning not having an invisible setting so I could be offline visibly but still chat to who I wanted to... "It'll come soon, don't worry". Soon, yeah.
