>French President Emmanuel Macron said any strikes would target Syrian government chemical facilities.
>A US Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, is in the Mediterranean, and the European air traffic control agency, Eurocontrol, has warned airlines to take "due consideration" while in the eastern Mediterranean over the next few days, because of the possible launch of missiles into Syria.
a scared populace is a compliant populace that'll let it's government do whatever it likes
If the Russians end up having to sink the USS Donald Cook it will probably be valid info also.
I was gonna say I doubt there'd be nuclear war over a ship getting lost but then I realised Donald Trump is president so ¯\_(0_o)_/¯
I'd like to think that Mattis and half his office would but a bullet between his eyes before his hand even got close to the button.
Besides even if this does escalate, I don't think either nation would touch each other at home, probably just Syrian and close regional ops until things calmed down
Or maybe we'll have a proxy war, like in the good old days.
Don't worry guys, Trump just gave us a head's up over twitter

Thx BB, we waiting for ya.

I cannot fathom the stupidity and demeanour of that orange cunt.
International geopolitics is now routinely done in 280 characters from the most powerful country on the planet.
Say this to someone 10 years ago they'd knock you out.
Does this count?

Trump used to mindlessly complain about 'giving notice' for these kinds of attacks

is this the same guy who said that it was "stupid" that the US and Allies announced when they were doing things
I swear he said something to that effect, the only reason I'm doubting is because it would be SO mindbendingly stupid for someone who made such comments to make a tweet like this, that I can only think that it's...actually completely plausible

There's ALWAYS an old tweet to make himself look stupid.
Oh good lord.
"I'm gonna blow your shit up big time with my fancy new weapons!"
Literally 1 hour later
"Guys why we fighting all the time lets be friends"
What a fucking child impeach immediately please.
It would seem someone got a call from his daddy following that first tweet.
nah, we just hacked his twitter.
I had to go back and look at his twitter because I couldn't believe he would flip flop in less than an hour. I don't know why I'm still surprised by this foolish man.
If Russia actually sank a US destroyer or submarine (no doubt there are attack subs in the Med by now) it would surely mean a shooting war between the US and Russia. Even if the Russian air force attempts to sink the ships and fails, it could still lead to war. It's been boiling up for years, but always staved off. Problem is, we do have a situation now where if we don't take action and risk open warfare, we have to countenance a chemical attack on Syrian civilians, most likely by Assad. And allow Russia to take control by forcing us to back down.
I don't want either situation?
Assad may be the most likely suspect, but the "rebels" in Douma are hardly saints. They were Jaysh al-Islam, radical Sunnis who want to establish an Islamic state, who have been accused of using chemical weapons before.
Rebel fighters begin leaving Syria's Douma after weeks
Jaish al-Islam to leave Douma in return for releasing prisoners
Syrian rebels admit chemical use against Kurds
Well crap. I guess the issue that's causing this escalation so quickly is that Russia will no longer comply or communicate with Europe/North America over enforcement of chemical weapons treaties. They've shown no intention of looking into who is guilty, so both sides are insisting (with no evidence either way) that their guy is innocent and no, you're not getting any proof because we don't have any. This is an incident where no side in the fight seems willing to actually make an effort to avoid more mistakes. In the last thread I remember the Red October clip: "This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it."
I doubt it would go from sinking of the ship straight to sending ICBMs the next day. It would definitely take time to escalate, with a series of catastrophic diplomatic failures each day onward.
Though that has definitely happened before. No one expected World War One to happen the day or even week after the Archduke was killed.
Good thing we have the best negotiator ever! People always tell me he's great a negotiating!
It wouldn't be a shooting war, trust me. It would not be good, but it would not be a shooting war. It would be a proxy war without end.
It's a fucking nightmare and I can't wake up.
Besides, Trump just likes yapping and sounding tough. He wouldn't have anything to gain by using an ICBM.
There's also very little chance at all Russia would take out an actual US warship. Maybe, maybe they'd intercept US-launched missiles if they have the capability to do so reliably.
Poison gas is horrific. In ww1 you had pools of mustard gas that would form in mud puddles that would burn your mucas membrane if you fell into it. And in ww2, allies in italy accidentally did an airstrike on a chemical weapons depot and the updraft caused the gas to travel over the mountains and poison allied soldiers on the other side of the ridge. Theres a reason why its illegal.
But of course, the rebels did this to themselves, on ground they're going to be trying to fight over and hold against an encroaching enemy. Right guys?
