• Night owls risk dying younger, should sleep in: study

Paris, France - People who stay up late and have to drag themselves out of bed are likelier to die younger than those who rise and set with the Sun, researchers said Thursday. A survey of more than 430,000 people in Britain found that night owls had a 10-per cent higher risk of dying in the 6.5-year study period than "larks". "This is a public health issue that can no longer be ignored," said study co-author Malcolm van Schantz of the University of Surrey - and argued that "night types" should be allowed to start and finish work later in the day. "Night owls trying to live in a morning-lark world may (suffer) health consequences," said fellow author Kristen Knutson of the Northwestern University in Chicago. The duo gathered information on nearly half-a-million people aged 38-73 from a public database. The participants had defined themselves as either "definitely a morning person" (27 per cent), "more a morning person than evening person" (35 per cent), "more an evening than a morning person" (28 per cent), or "definitely an evening person" (nine per cent). They also listed their weight, smoking habits, and socioeconomic status. http://www.asiaone.com/health/night-owls-risk-dying-younger-should-sleep-study
Been saying this for years; nice having a job where until crunch hits I can work late and get up late unmolested, meanwhile friends with same diurnal cycle as me that have "regular jobs" are starting to have health issues, particularly stress hormone related ones.
If I'm an evening person, but sleeps 9 hours a day, doesn't do drugs, drinks or smoke, am I still in trouble?
no then you're just boring lmao
I thought this was about animals at first, but seeing as I'm also a "night owl", guess I'll die.
time to die i guess
But what if I'm not a bird?
I am so fucked.
What kind of boring life do you lead where you need any of those to have any sort of fun?
have to drag themselves out of bed sounds like billions gonna die then
should sleep in Don't tell me what I should do, Internet!
Research finds that tired, overworked people are more prone to health issues. Wow, who'd have thought.
Kinda sucks seeing as some people are just NATURALLY night-owls. When I worked nights, I got up, felt refreshed, went to work, felt great. Working days? Even if I go to bed early I feel tired as hell and have to drag my ass to work. The fact is I'm simply more "alert" and "active" at night, even if I should be feeling tired, and I'm not alone in this. Many people simply, for whatever reason, just seem to function better at night, but most jobs/businesses are catered to day people's needs.
What if I work second shift and don't have any choice but to get to bed only at 2 in the morning?
I work several splits a week, so I'll be up at 6am and home by 10pm, maybe bed just before midnight. I'll get like 6 hours sleep and then do it all again. I've started doing this on my days off too, maybe 'sleep in' until 8. I used to be a 3pm to 6am cycle sort of person but it honestly felt horrible, waking up early in a morning just motivates me to do more shit.
I've always been someone who's been more at home staying up, doesn't help that I usually need ~10 hours of sleep to actually feel rested.
I'm a morning person who feels absolutely rested and ready to start my day after only 4-6 hours of sleep. If I sleep more than 6 hours I actually wake up every half hour feeling feverish and sick, I've vomited once or twice from it. I went to a doctor about it because the whole 'HEALTHY PEOPLE NEED 7-8 HOURS OR THEY ARE NOT HEALTHY, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE" thing people push around like it's a fucking bible of sleep and he said it was chill, my body probably just doesn't need the extra sleep. So what does that make me? Because I can just fine stay up late until 1-2am and wake up at my favourite time of day, between 7-8am.
So what does that make me? Fortunate? Enjoy spending a sixth of your life sleeping instead of the regular third.
I managed to get my boss to allow me to work from 10am to 6pm instead of the usual 9-5, but I still struggle to wake up and it takes me time to get rid of the grogginess. School was a nightmare because I'd have to wake up at 7 in the morning to get ready and be at the bus to make it to school at 8. During summer vacation I'd sleep when I felt tired and I'd consistently fall asleep later than 2am and wake up after noon. I'm going to get a sleep study done soon but no matter how hard I try to stick to a morning schedule I'm always tired unless I go to bed late and wake up late. I'm not expecting anything other than "get a job that let's you work evenings".
Just so you know, sending messages to people at 5am in the morning because you're coked out of your head is really annoying and your life isn't as interesting to hear about as you think. Regards, person who had to deal with a dumbass coke addict of a friend constantly harassing him at stupid hours because he was feeling paranoid and needed someone to babysit him on skype.
what if i live underground? (not saying i don't)
Well in all fairness that doesn't sound boring even if annoying
If I sleep for 5-6 hours, I'll wake up 100% alert, rested, and ready to go. If I sleep more than that, i'm groggy all day long. Guess I'll just die early then, who gives a fuck.
you say that but your intentionally the most boring person on this entire website so idk man weird shit
lmao I went basically the entirety of my time in school on like 3hrs of sleep a day(never took any naps either), and have only just recently managed to sort of salvage some kind of normal sleep schedule. I'm fuckedddd
i'm going to upload myself into a robot anyways, no need to change these self-destructive habits.
"need drugs to have fun" good life advice there..
First read the thread about alcohol shortening my life and now this? I'm absolutely fucked. The hours I can concentrate and work really well start at around 20:00. When I'm able to work on my own schedule, I feel pretty great, but right now I have to start in the mornings and tend to feel more awful and worse at concentrating on stuff. It's kind of a coincidence to read this now though, not long ago I was having a conversation with a teacher about some stuff and we ended up talking about how the school/work system should change to cater to how people have different "peak hours".
Different people are different. There's a reasonable number of people (a lot of which are stuck in academia I find) that do their best work at night, when the noise of the world is gone and nobody is around to pull them out of whatever mental zone they need to be in to work efficiently. Some of my best nights for work during my degree were me staying up until the sun came up and sleeping until midday to start it all again. Some people just aren't morning people.
can't stay up late, can't drink wine every day. whats next? what's there to live for? that's it, i'm never sleeping and i'm drinking alcohol constantly. just hook me up to a drip of 150 proof try and stop me
