I figure this goes without saying, but this is entirely subjective on multiple levels. There is no such thing as an objectively best Jazz album.

doubt it's the best but a personal favorite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL-B_Qfj30o
there is a record out there for everyone that fully encapsulates the essence of what is best about jazz music.

tbh jazz for me was kept alive and well through the 60s and 70s by its transition into more experimental movements. I love traditional elements of jazz, I really do.. but one day I chose to lie in bed and put headphones on and listen to this: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/112927/bba9cb00-b6bb-4bb0-bc26-f14842a938ff/R-757267-1353204910-6907.jpeg.jpg I couldn't fucking sleep afterwards. The chaos and madness put me in a trance for the full duration, literally like a jungle. This probably reflects who I am as a person rather than the genre; but I'd argue that Coltrane came into his own in his last periods of his life.
that album is amazing my personal favourite is william parker & in order to survive - the peach orchard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6st4Qnrg7c

Some favourites of mine. Flawless trio performance, you'll be hard pressed to find a trio more in tune with one another than in this set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xktZpMI9r64 Incredibly structured and adventurous jazz. I like to think of this as the equivalent of atonal period Schoenberg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln8naZpOJ0o Solid avant garde postbop. One of my favs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9KM_KJKPMo
