Humans to be genetically-modified in Europe for the first time this year using g

urope will see its first genetically engineered patients using a groundbreaking gene-splicing therapy this year after regulators approved trials.
The biotech companyCrispr Therapeutics is hoping to cure the disease beta thalassaemia, a devastating blood disorder which reduces the production of haemoglobin, the protein which carries oxygen to cells.
Without sufficient oxygen, sufferers can be left with bone deformities, severe anaemia, slow growth, fatigue and shortness of breath.
The disease is caused by a genetic mutation in the HBB gene, but scientists are confident that they can alter the body’s code to fix the problem and restore healthy levels of haemoglobin.
It will be the first human...

Let's hope gene-splicing therapy will be the next vaccine
Good. Hopefully we can keep the stupid "you can't play god!" morons away for long enough for this to become widespread.
One step closer to cat girls
and furries
imagine the possibilities
I volunteer to become the world's first cat boi
personally i would've expected "d" or maybe "q" to allow more advancement in this field, i'm surprised (but excited) they made such progress with g
Women already don't make sense with their actions, why make it even worse.
I am happy that we are able to fix problems like these, but as far as making it 'widespread' I suppose you will have to elaborate. I'm for fixing problems, I'm not so sure about going farther than that too soon. We should be careful and play it slow, not only so to appease 'you can't play god! morons' but also so that you don't ruin it for everyone by fucking it up too spectacularly and postponing its use even longer.
At this point, gene modification is effectively inevitable, but we still don't know whether that "inevitable" is 10 years or 50 years from now. It depends on trials such as this and their success.
I have thalassemia and was just talking with my boyfriend last night about genetically engineering humans to avoid passing down diseases like this. Hope these kind of treatments become more accessible in the future.
now you can genetically engineer women who are easy to read... hmm, why stop there?
It will help us know who to purge in the years to come.
It would be amazing to see the day humans can age slowly and live past 100+ years. Imagine being at your 20s when you're 80+ years old.
The downside to this is people in power, imagine 100 more years of Putin
Ehh, natural causes have always been too good for people like that.
Let's just hope this genetic modifying is only used for diseases and similar purposes.
It's not russia and putin who we should fear in WW3. It's genetically engineered furry race
I wonder if such tech can be applicable to curing at least some types of cancer in the future.
Why
GATTACA comes to mind.
You mean GATTACA, the work of fiction?
As if that nullifies his argument
You mean 1984, the work of fiction?
You mean Animal Farm, the work of fiction?
You mean A Handmaid's Tale, the work of fiction?
All of these detail the dark side of humanity, and since we still have racism (and systematic racism in places) and have only recently in the grand scheme of things gotten rid of (racial) slavery in the US, I have no doubt if there was a genetically modified "upper class" this could happen.
It kind of does when you think about how quickly genes spread and how humans are historically shitty at sticking to their "class" even in the most authoritarian of class/caste systems, assuming we instantaneously went full class separation when such a thing came out.
It just wouldn't be a problem even in the most fictional of scenarios.
Humans have been stuck in classes for a VERY long time, this just makes it obvious
I personally see a bit more of a deus ex future, where the rich and wealthy can afford these changes and poor cannot.
Today, we still uphold the idea that if someone is gifted and works hard, they can make it somewhere. now, this idea is already under attack with the wealth disparity we have today, but to say that the "American dream" is completely dead would be unfair.
However, with technologies such as this, people who can afford these could make themselves smarter, stronger, they could actually make themselves better. How can someone of a lower class even begin to compete with this?
I am a believer in progress and want this tech to go foward, because this can do a lot of good, but to say that there are no ethical concerns is ignorant
Okay, and?
We shouldn't hold back scientific development for something that would quite literally better humanity because we're afraid of possible social implications.
If class inequality bothers you, focus on shit that's real, that's affecting people and upholding class disparity now. Nutrition is an absolutely prime example of this.
Not hold back, just regulate
Regulate how? It's not really possible to have a discussion if you aren't giving details and also aren't responding to the details of people that you're talking to.
