How about make it so that profanity doesn't demonetize you at all because why the FUCK is that a thing?
Firearms: Does the video contain images of real firearms or weapons?
[ ] No
[ ] Yes
[ ] Yes, and contains information about fabrication or modification of firearms to increase capacity, concealment, or lethality
Well yeah, those are the kinds of videos advertisers might bitch about being placed on.
If you lie you'll likely get punished and lose these privileges.
Which is great, because they run ads on news channels all the time which show all that content and more and that's perfectly fine, but noooooo, can't let those wily YouTubers run ads on the same content, no sir.
It's fucking amazing how out of touch Youtube is, it genuinely feels like the staff just do things in isolation from how the site actually runs
Get Red and don't worry about it, since demonetized videos still get Red revenue.
You have to remember that, especially for larger channels of official brands like CNN. A lot of the ads are actually part of their TV promotions as well. So these companies have already signed up for playing ads on those CNN videos. I remember uproar about one of the late night talk shows getting it, but it was revealed that in youtube's system, that video clip from the late night show was actually demonitzied. The ads playing were from corporate media deals instead of with youtube which you can do.
The demonitization for Youtubers is different as its based on an algorithm and companies relying on that.
I wouldn't call this youtube pussying out on it,
but the advertisers.
Still watching over the video, but giving advertisers the ability to not give a shit about their name being on content that covers this.
I haven't used platforms to put ads on things, but I'm familiar somewhat with facebook a few years ago, which allowed you to target interest groups and regions alike.
With something like that, you can easily make an inverse of it, targeting videos that do not hit these tags.
It's not the worst thing that's been happening, people censoring swear words due to fear of demonitisation is yuck.
But there's also, as with what H3H3 did make notice of last year, the advertisers really didn't care on sensitive news stuff when broadcasted on the television.
Commercial stations still rely on sponsorships to be able to broadcast the news programs here, which have their ads as the first and last ad within the break.
Probably still years of a acceptable monetisation solution for youtube, but this is a good step to help creators have some consistency in what is, and is not going to help them financially
Oh, that's fancy.
too bad red doesn't exist in canada
It's some shit, I wish YT would work on it.
Probably some legal obstacle, which sucks.
Like, I don't think YT is amazing, for a lot of reasons.
But I also think a lot of the "bad" shit they're doing, is because their hand is being forced to by the people literally paying their bills (advertisers). So the less YT needs to rely on advertisers, they more they can tell them to fuck off, and the less demonetization will matter.
TBH that's why I'm a little pessimistic about YouTube alternatives in the meantime without hearing about their business model.
If it's just ads, then it's not even worth considering imo. Although YouTube seriously botched YouTube Red's introduction and they also shot themselves with their loss-leading model making people expect the magic to go on forever.
Because 18+ content does not advertise well and ad companies want everything PG13.
It really isn't youtube being sensitive, its them trying their hardest to be as advertiser friendly as possible.
Which of course is pretty stupid but they bring in the money, YT happily bends over.
I fucking cringe when I hear beeps nowadays.
