The retaliation came in the form of passage of a last-minute amendment attached to the House appropriations bill that triggered heated debate on the House floor and stinging rebukes from lawmakers from Memphis. Last year the city of Memphis, which is majority black, was able to find a legal loophole to get rid of two Confederate statues and a bust by selling city parks to a nonprofit, which swiftly removed the monuments. Taken away under cover of darkness where statues of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Forrest was a general in the confederacy, a slave owner and a leader in the Ku Klux Klan. A bust of a Confederate soldier was also removed. Another Republican lawmaker said removing the monuments was erasing history, something he said ISIS does, and it was a bad action that deserved punishment.

Oh I'm sure this really teaches Memphis that it's bad for opposing the memorialization of traitors and white supremacists, they'll put those statues back up right away, I'm sure. Anyone complaining that removing the statues is "removing history" wants to preserve a history of oppressing and straight murdering blacks as an enduring message to tell future generations. And while it's important to tell that story, telling it from the South's side with all the whitewashing they've built into it is an act of selling revisionist history and therefore lies. If I was rich I'd gift the city with a million dollars for that bicentennial celebration as a fuck-you to state Republicans.

Erasing history is still funny considering isis was blowing up ancient buildings and artifacts for shits and giggles. This is taking down statues that were propped up mostly during the civil rights era.

If someone pulls down a statue actually erected in the immediate wake of the civil war, there's a claim to 'destroying history' and the removal should be considered carefully. Pulling down a statue to a southern civil war "hero" erected in the 20th century under revisionist history pretenses is merely correcting an error.

Worth noting that Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered the dissolution of the KKK at some point and became a prominent civil rights activist. Not that that's what his statue was praising I'm sure, just saying he ought to be remembered for more than being a KKK member.
