What the fuck is wrong with these people
sure is gonna be fun watching people use this to paint all 1 billion Chinese people as somehow inherently uncivilised barbarians
Visitors to the zoo were known to try to provoke the Australia marsupials to get them to display their signature hopping mode of locomotion using their powerful hind legs.
Sick, absolutely fucking sick.
This is absolutely a fair response to some of the backlash these stories get, but I also think it's definitely an uncomfortable issue worth looking at.
IIRC, I read an article about how Chinese tourists are an almost universal problem amongst tourist agencies. It's easy to dismiss the news cycle as promoting uncomfortably racist and cherry picked news stories, but Chinese tourists behaving absolutely unacceptably is a recurring issue that people are experiencing outside news stories like these and internet forum debates.
I shouldn't speak any more on the issue because I'm not expert, but I'm mostly wondering why this is. Obviously, as you said, 1 billion Chinese people aren't somehow uncivilized barbarian people, but why do so many who decide to travel overseas find themselves unable to conform to social norms, customs, and y'know, oblige to basic manners?
Someone posted on this issue ages ago, I can't remember who, but I seem to remember them saying something about how the class of Chinese people who tend to be able to afford to travel do tend to be among the more impolite folk, children of rich parents and such. But I'd love to hear someone more knowledgeable on the subject lay out why Chinese tourists tend to be such god damn shitters.
I think at this point, we just need a disclaimer, or be reminded of one, saying that "not all [insert people with negative attitude here] are like this"
theres probably dozens of examples of western tourists travelling to far flung destinations and breaking all sorts of social norms without realising (in the 19th century we built a global empire out of doing that hurr hurr) that I cba to find right now, most probably more minor than killing a kangaroo, mind.
I'm not saying that chinese tourists are all pure and good of course, and I agree that it's largely I guess the 'spoilt' crowds, but that's also not a problem endemic to chinese culture alone. I guess the simple fact is that it's a problem because there's more of them vs other country's spoilt kids simply because there's more chinese people in the world?
More like the fact that there is a rising middle class, and overnight rich farmers who got land bought by the state. Couple that with the cultural revolution making everyone fend for themselves, its not a surprise when they want things for themselves.
No shit, nobody is saying that 1 billion of them are cunts. But when you have so many people, there's gonna be more cunts in general. Call it xenophobic if you want, but its true, and its a problem that even the government agree with. Just because I'm chinese by ethnicity, I get bad rep because people think I'm from China.
Chinese people tend to be pretty fucking self centered, selfish and rude to people they don't know, or who aren't other chinese people (a lot of them are surprisingly racist). It's literally ingrained in whatever the fuck is left of chinese "culture", out of their precious fucking 5000 years, the big cultural pillars they kept was spitting on the ground, drinking hot water, and pushing to the front of the line (queues do not exist in the middle kingdom). After having been through China a few times, i'd have to observed the most chinese are fucking oblivious. I'm really not surprised at the end of the day, because the chinese have a fucking horrific track record on animal welfare.
Every nice Chinese person I've met always turns out to be second-generation, or raised somewhere away from China.
Rudeness and selfishness isn't ingrained into their genetics or anything, and I don't know enough about their culture to say anything.
But I've not met a single Chinese national that isn't ridiculously rude, and I've met a lot of Chinese people since I moved to Melbourne.
Try actually living in mainland china for a year or so.
Considering that even amongst the chinese who've lived here(Vancouver) for some time, there's a general consensus that chinese tourists are the worst, I don't really see this as a racial issue. It's quite literally a cultural one, and as many chinese people will tell you, there are issues with that in such a massive country. With so many people, the rates of incidence just go up due to a higher statistical likelyhood of interacting with the worst examples and there isn't exactly a lot of manners being taught in some areas according to the chinese nationals I know and am friends with. Some of the more rural and country bound areas have some reputations even amonsgt the chinese themselves.
It's not ingrained in genetics, that's just straight up racism, but it's no question that Chinese society incentivizes selfishness. One of my good friends is from Xinjiang, and he fucking hates china. He's Han as well, he just hates the government.
holy shit, exactly this
it annoys me when nobody seems to remember the fact that china suffered through the cultural revolution, among dozens of other things to make them this way.
if you go to singapore, the ethnic chinese there are nothing like mainlanders.
in general, chinese diaspora from before the communists are probably more like traditional chinese than the ones from the mainland (you know, especially considering how the cultural revolution destroyed chinese culture). then you have westerners coming in and thinking that's just ancient chinese culture for some reason, whether they're defending it or attacking it. it's idiotic.
they're not inherently uncivilized barbarians, but the fact is that this is a pretty common problem with mainlanders that even their gov't recognizes and tries to fix.
i don't get why people in the west always seem to feel the obligation to defend foreign cultures seemingly just because those cultures are foreign. the mainlanders have a problem because of their stupid fucking gov't and it's a problem they have to fix.
That being said, living in an expat enclave with all the other tims and tinas in Shanghai/Beijing isn't anything like being sent out to tier 88 nongzhou where all the uncle gambei are getting fucked up on baiju and scream HAI-LO when the one white person they've seen in months walks by. Spending your days at the desk of happy giraffe english teaching school, drunk as a skunk, trying to remember why the fuck you're here in the first place, and wishing you'd gone to fucking college.
Its even worse when the chinese expect us to return the favour because our ancestors from china came over to Singapore like 200 years ago.
Like aside from the culture, our national culture is vastly different from theirs.
Even worst when people from china with basic understanding of english work here and yet they expect non chinese locals to talk to them in chinese.
while i've been lucky enough to avoid a lot of chinese tourists where i am (silicon valley), meeting them is kinda weird. it's like meeting a fucking alien even though we're both ethnically chinese. i speak cantonese and read/write in traditional while they speak mandarin and read/write in simplified and our culture is just completely different. generally though, they're just cold/rude. my parents always say the same thing-- mainlanders are very often like this.
We made a game out of how many people shitting in the street we saw a week
I hope those people get hit by a people of bricks. See how they like it.
all 1 billion chinese people are inherently uncivilized barbarians
but this doesn't come as much of a surprise, just look at the chinese culture and how it cultivates such behaviors, when your own government isolates you from the rest of the world, hides massive events like the tianamen square, creates entire towns to inflate GDP, you can't be too confused when it's like a large group of people who have been improperly raised.
tbh living as an honest man in China doesn't work at all. Just the other day I saw the news about a woman who gives free buns to the homeless, who turn around and demand her to give them money instead while saying shes giving out buns since she had an 'ulterior motive' and caused a huge mess in her shop. I am not saying there aren't good person in China, I personally knows some pretty nice guy, but the huge amount of cunts who just try to rips other off at every moment just overshadows them, and makes everyone else indifferent to other people because it'll probably get them into trouble if they care. I mean, last time I heard drivers in China would intentionally kills the person that they hit because you only need to pay once if they're dead.
well hey stereotypes come from somewhere, 80-90% of chinese tourists are selfish, intolerant assholes anyway
My parents told me that in China if an old person collapses on the street no-one will go and physically help them up. At the most they'll just call an ambulance and move on. The reason is because they don't want to run the risk of the old person turning around and claiming that it was them who knocked them down, thus resulting in a lawsuit that they can't prove their way out (as the court is likely to favour the old person). It's quite sad.
Maybe we should invade china after this.
Or, you know
Chinese tourists are a problem because they act like trash in their majority and it has absolutely nothing to do with their race, just the way they act on a personal level which aggregates to an entire discernible category over time.
There's plenty wrong with chinese culture just like any other culture in the world but they happen to export some of that via tourism and it sucks a fucking lot.
Heck, even we dislike mainlanders a lot. Plenty of local post online showing mainlanders doing crazy shit. It’s pretty much assumed here that a PRC Mainlander is behind any bizarre cases reported here like shitting publicly, public nuisance etc.
Bricking zoo animals to death isn't a matter of misunderstanding another culture's social norms. You just don't fucking do that. It doesn't matter where you're from.
Some people just don't give a shit about animals.
Folks had some neighbors move in across the street, since they've been there they have shot and killed:
The local foxes (which kept the mice down)
The skunks (which kept the mice down (we have loads of deer mice in the country here))
Jack rabbits (which are a protected fucking species around here)
A bull snake that had lived there for years without hurting anyone (which also kept the rattlesnakes at bay, that snake had lived there for years when an old woman lived there, and she gave it the space it needed because she respected it)
But when those idiots went hunting, their son (who loves to shoot cottontails and Jack rabbits with his BB gun) couldn't bring himself to shoot an elk that he got a license and tag for.
ah yes this was quite an experience when me and my friends went to mainland china, it was disgusting but whenever we saw someone try to sneak out a shit we would be shouting Sha guā, which is what we thought meant big melon to the poor guy who was trying to drop one
governments of western countries don't feel the need to write an idiots guide to being a decent tourist for their own people though.
You ever been to bali?
Its a shame what middle class bogan fuck Australians do at bali.
But a idiots guide probably wont help the situation.
