Hmm, trying to halt the relatively major progressive changes the crown prince has been pushing?
Some people are trying to say that this was a case of royal guards shooting down a drone, but others within Riyadh are reporting explosions.
Either way... Saudi Arabia is a goddamn powder keg in terms of claims to the throne. I would not be surprised if this turns out too be one of those guys that got sacked for corruption last year.
Depends on the people.
If it's a military coup, we could see a military government established, with a transitional phase to either establish a new royal house or simply enact another claimant to the throne.
If it's a coup by a faction within the House of Saud, this could very well drift into a minor insurrection, if not limited civil war with multiple factions using their financial might to bring in Mercenaries, PMCs, and Jihadis.
Saudi Arabia is far from perfect, but I'd hate to see it fall into old habits.; even the slowest rate of progression is better than retrogression.
Some saying it was just a toy drone and its a false alarm, though this might be an attempt to downplay something
Sounds like a lot of gunfire for a drone. I almost feel like having a CRAM system would be more efficient...
A lot of social backpedaling, like women not being able to drive in the future and stuff like that.
hopefully the crown prince is pulling an erdogan and faking a coup for political power, hes not that good but hes the best chance for the KSA

It might sound amplified since its in a city, but they're probably shooting a bunch of assault rifles/machine guns at it like in this clip.
Also, the Saudis' military isn't exactly the most competent, even if they have a bunch of fancy toys.
I think Svinnik was saying that's a preferable scenario to a regressive coup, something I concur with. It wouldn't be good but it would be less bad.
I don't think there is a 100% good way this could be happening. A false alarm is the closest I can think of, and that's neither all that great, nor all that likely.
Stop. He's bad.
He's spent billions and billions of dollars on his image to appear on the news, billboards, interviews, and tv to try to look good.

Recognize this impression as the success of a long and cynical campaign.

This is all happening at the same time as he's brutally destroying Yemen.
The war in Yemen is entering its fourth year. A remote land barely known by most US
citizens, 22 of Yemen’s 29 million people are now suffering from what
the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
About 8 million Yemenis are on the brink of starvation, 16 million lack basic water and sanitation, and more than 1 million are wracked with cholera — another world record.
What the Saudis Have Wrought
Human lives are more important than performative human rights & looking progressive.
This is a more proper way of thinking.
I already said that Saudi Arabia is far from perfect, him included. The country has taken several steps back and taken some steps forward, and you can acknowledge some "improvements", for lack of a better term, without starting a fan club for the man; cherry-picking what you acknowledge is silly. It doesn't mean you're condoning shittiness. In fact, I constantly argue that the UK should stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia because of what they use them for.
Doesn't seem like there is any decent source on this being a coup attempt

The houthis are funded and supported by Iran, they started the war. He's not causing the destruction of yemen, if anything Iran and the houthis are. The KSA and its coalition is helping the actual Yemenite government fight against Iranian meddling in Yemen. If you want to blame anyone for the suffering in yemen, the majority of the blood is on the Iranians/Houthis hands for starting this conflict in the first place.
He may be an oppressive tyrants who funds radical terrorists and waging a war with another country, but he lets women watch movies so it's ok.
Yeah it'd be much better if Saudi Arabia just never improved at all.
No one is saying it's not improving. But it's stupid to say "it has improved" at this point. A handful of minor, common sense rights such as allowing women to drive does not mean the entire country is just a fantastic nation.
No, it doesn't. But it's more than anyone expected to happen in a place like that. But people expect them to become European overnight, and that's not realistic. It's going to take a very long time and I'm still expecting things to suddenly regress or never pan out.
What does that have to do with what I said? Did I say he's a good person? No, so don't get all twisty and bent out of shape because you wanted to jump to a "BUT BUT NO WAIT BUT!" They're making advances on some human rights fronts. And as I said, they're relatively major in the literal since. Relative to their prior conditions, its major progress. Doesn't make it not shit, but they are relatively major progresses.
No one is claiming it's a fantastic nation, simply that it is a better nation than it was. Corrupt shithole that wages proxywars with terrorist-groups in foreign nations where women can watch movies is better than corrupt shithole that wages proxywars with terrorist-groups in foreign nations where women can't watch movies. It's an improvement. A small, insignificant one, but it is an improvement.
I don't think people are saying the Saudis are the cause for the Yemen war but they're also not exactly doing anything to win the hearts and minds of those on the ground there either. Its another proxy war that has no end in sight since the iranians will keep exporting arms and missiles and funding to them as long as they can.
I wish people would stop falling for this ridiculiously transparent "progressive" facade. It's just so fucking obvious.
God knows why even Ellen was showing this guy in a positive light when according to the laws in the country she'd be swinging from a crane if she was born there.
I just don't think these improvements in which modern nations all consider extremely obvious to have is enough to warrant praise as a "progressive" or "improving" country.
When they stop being an absolute monarchy, they'll stop being an absolute crap nation. That's something to praise. Little stuff like allowing women to drive is just bread and circuses compared to things that actually matter.
It's not progressive, but it's absolutely improving, and it's part of a steady move away from the steady unsustainable rentier economy Saudi Arabia has had for the last long while that has enabled the country to be a high-functioning shithole like it is. The crown prince knows damn well that the country has to turn itself into a more normal economy instead of a rentier state, and is fairly steadily working on reforms that give people rights as incentives to work, which in turn will bring improvements along.
Guys chill the fuckdown its a toy drone
