...you capture a gun, used and in very deteriorated state, and it functions as new right until it breaks down?!? Really?
While not looking for realism, I would like having gun maintenance in the game. A deteriorated gun will have random blockages, inaccuracy, and should get you killed unless you care for it. You get a blockage, you need to clear the chamber (reload), loose that round and shoot again.
Let's say at 75% down until 0% your accuracy drops significantly and starting also from 75% you start having random blockages (75% - once every 50 shots, 50% - once every 25shots, 25% - once every 10 shots, 10% - every 5 shots)
There be 3 causes for blockages in this ideea:
- cause A: parts become progressively used (loose, dented, etc) and no ammount of maintenance short of replacement (repair) will fix that. This part is in the game, think tools: it is the maximum "health" left to the gun. This degrades the gun at a slow but continuous rate with use(differentiated by gun type and tier)
- cause B: mechanism has became clogged with burnt gunpowder, causing frequent blockages. This could be a yellow stripe on the health bar. Performing gun maintenance will diminish the chance of having blockages in the upcomming fight.
- cause C: those are handmade things, made for tight tolerances. No matter how well maintained, a hand made gun should have a chance of blockage, independent of the other factors. Only the drop guns (factory made) would not have this third cause for blockage.
Well, for the sake of being realistic, guns really aren't that fickle. I'd agree that it would be cool to have some sort of maintenance mechanic though.
The thing is stuff like AK's do tend to run like brand new until they just flat out break. That's why they're would renoun for their reliability. Things like M249 saws on the other hand, those really are more fickle. Even then though even heavy use tends to take a LONG time to actually wear military grade firearms.
In my opinion I think a more reasonable approach would be adding jamming/stoppages like you said,. If you make your own ammo it's going to probably burn dirty and cause a lot more fouling, which would cause it to jam more often depending on the platform. If you pick up ammo from say scientists or military tunnel though, it's higher quality and thus James less often. I think your spot on for the hand made guns, at least the semi-auto anyway. Revolvers in general are pretty fool proof, even with really crappy dirty ammo (unless it's a misfire, which would be a cool addition as well), and the same can be said for bolt actions.
I think it would be cool, but if they did the community would freak out like the new ak recoil.
We can't even have the real Bullets fired in the guns and you want realistic Gun Maintenance?
Show me a 357 Magnum that shoots 9mm Parrabellum Rounds? Show me an AK that shoots .223 /5.56?
get real
Did not say anything about realistic. Just something resembling it.
As for gun calibers, being hand made, we might consider them conversions (AK for 5.56, Magnum for 9mm) and let that slide.
