It derives from every modern franchise imaginable and does a good job at it but it's not the 10/10 revolution some early metacritic reviews have claimed.
At least it's not a fucking paid service like what ubisoft's doing with their games.
BOI
I must say, this game's writing is really, really solid.
It may not have incredibly powerful moments, but most scenes and conversations are characteristic and succinct, despite the game's length. I was expecting some boring fillers.
I like Kratos as a dad and a washed up/worn out god. GoW 1-3 had fantastic gameplay but Kratos just felt like a murder hobo fueled by his hatred of everything that never really made me connect with him. I feel like his character is a major improvement in the franchise.
You're not really supposed to connect with Kratos in the older ones, he's an over the top greek hero and greek heroes weren't nice people, nor were they virtuous. They were basically all murder hobos.
A friend of mine is playing it, and hes loving throwing an axe at an enemy, pummeling another, then recalling the axe to finish off the pummel. The gameplay is different but its still pretty fun. Also the characters and writing is a full step up.
The coolest thing about the game is the camera, until you die or go into the menu, it never cuts for the entirety of the game.
I get being skeptical, but when you start playing it all those 10s make sense. It's that good.
Honestly I’ve been playing the game for about 14hrs. This is the first game I’ve felt in a while that deserved a 10. Cinematically it’s leaps ahead of anything(even naughty dog games), the writing and dialogue is excellent, there’s so many great moments. It’s emotional, and has such a sense of awe.
The graphics are top notch and the environments and characters are so well done. The epic boss fights are better than ever and feel so much more tense.
the gameplay is solid, the combat is meaty, and the throwing axe move might be one of the best game feels I’ve had.
I love that the game is open enough to offer intrigue and exploration, without being another open world full of tedious fluff.
Recalling the axe just feels so good. The combat feels like it has weight (although it felt like that in the originals anyways).
The gameplay is diffferent but it still FEELS like a God of War game. Serious props to Santa Monica for being able to pull this off.
I've got a thread up and running if anyone wants to come in and discuss the new game.
God Of War Discussion Thread v1 "BOI"
And also a pretty damn solid child VO, which is basically unheard of. I didn't want to rip my ears out listening to him talk
