Alright, now that the main post is out of the way. Feel free to discuss anything about the previous games and talk about the recently released game as well.
BE SURE TO USE SPOILER TAG'S INVOLVING ANYTHING WITH THE NEW GAME'S STORY OR PLOT.
The damn retail seller I've preordered God of War from had a problem with the sheer volume of preorders and shipped me the game only today. That's ok though, given they were extremely politely about it and I'll be on a holyday in few days, so I'lll have plenty of time to catch up.
I went to extreme lenghts in order not to spoil me anything from this game.
I was spoiled a cameo or two from your usual YouTube assholes and some details about Odyn's protrayal in this new serie.
On this subject, I have to say that, while Odyn and the Asi (his bloodline) weren't exactly the most likable and ethical sort to begin with, reinterpretating Odyn as basically a paranoid warlock so obsessed with the idea of preventing Ragnarok at all costs that he'll go full Big Brother on his own realm, routinely and cruelly torturing anyone standing in his way (some times just for kicks) and using his magic to corrupt even his faithful Valkyries sounds like a serious overkill to me
Fuck, we needed a thread like this. I need to vent about the ending:
Atreus being Loki is absolute bollocks and I'm hoping Faye was just wanting to name him in honor of the real deal. I'm saying it's bollocks because unless there's some serious time-travel involved later, it's not making a whole lot of sense from a mythological perspective.
Loki has 4 childrens in the original stories, 3 of which are found to be omens of evil and are dealt with by Odin.
Hel, the goddess of Death and ruler of Helheim. Before her arrival, Helheim was not the "domain of the dead", so we can safely assume she exists & is already instituted in the realm.
Jörmungandr, the world serpant, was released into the ocean by Odin where he continued to grow.
Fenrir, the giant wolf, whose sons are Skoll and Hati - who we know exist in the world given there's a whole puzzle surrounding them.
Finally there's Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse. While we haven't seem him we can assume he exists since it's likely (by extension anyway) that the other 3 do.
So, yeah, unless there's some weird time-travel involved they've gone and flipped a pretty significant portion of the mythology on its head.
To be fair, I haven't played the previous GoW games so I don't know how many creative liberties they took with the Greek pantheon. But yeah, this bugged me.
Creative liberties is... basically the name of the game in the God of War series
I mean, the first trilogy is about Kratos, an OC, coming into Adgard and murdering basically all of the gods, including Zeus. Who is his father.
This game is, honestly, way more faithful to the source material, so to speak.
Well, there was a Kratos in the original Greek mythos, but he was a pretty insignificant figure and not exactly the war machine he is in the games, hah. That said, it sounded to me like the overall base "genealogy" and legend of the gods was relatively untouched and then they let the game be essentially a "fan-fiction continuation" of the mythology.
I'm not sure what I can and can't spoiler-tag so I'm just gonna play it safe lmao
At the end of the day, we havent completed the series, and except for the reveal of Atreus’ original name and everything that comes along with that, everything about the mythology is faithful.
So well just have to wait and see whats to come!
Nyehh, for the most part, but some parts are notoriously off.Odin wasn't nearly this paranoid in the original stories, Baldr was actually a kind God who after Ragnarök helped the world grow again, and Bifröst is actually a rainbow bridge that burned in the sky. That last one is a pretty minor change I guess and I suppose they had to change that for the sake of gameplay, but I was a bit disappointed at the lack of rainbow.
Still, I'm excited to see what's next.
I'm pretty sure there's some time travel involved, for instance; Freya tells Kratos and BOY that Jormungandr just appeared in the lake one day and stayed there, and isn't it said in the Norse mythos that he was sent back in time at some point? I just read that somewhere so I'm not actually sure about that.
Also another thing that might involve time travel, when Atreus falls ill and Kratos carries him to Freya, you hear the serpant's horn being blown by someone, and from what Freya tells us, the language he speaks is dead and forgotten, and the only people that do know it are Mimir, and by the end of the game Atreus.
Why the fuck can't I activate realm shift with this amulet?
Okay, so I think Ive worked out what, exactly, the jotun are, and what theyre primary attribute is that sets them apart from humanity and the other races
Think about what we know of all the giants. Theres the one with 8 arms, one is the size of mountains, and two are great wolves. The only one we actually see, the World Serpent, is the a massive snake. I think this suggests that the jotunns main attribut is that they can take on different forms. This is why the gods hated them, because how can you control a race that can transform into absolutely anything.
I’ve not been following the new GOW at all besides maybe the first or second trailer and a random YouTube video of some gameplay. I’ve played the entire main trilogy, so I’m at least caught up.
That said, overall how is the gameplay? The video on YouTube I saw was a fight againstone of the Valkryies(?)but it was by some weeaboo memer comparing it to God Hand, and saying it was just spammy, but not entirely indicative of the whole, I imagine.
I saw that video and he is a legit good player. I guess that's an "optimal" way to play.
That would also make a pretty big deviation from Norse mythology then, because that definetely ain't the case there lol.
Ugh, one of the challenge missions requires you to kill enemies before they respawn.
Yet they can respawn during several second long kill animations. The fuck
Anyone got a favorite track? I think mine is easily "Ashes", especially at the crescendo in the middle and end. It's absolutely beautiful and it just gives me goosebumps every time.

Most definitely
I wouldn't say that's the case. Just in this children's book translation of Snorri's translations I have in my classroom, you've got Suttung into an eagle, Gefjon's four sons into bulls, Tjasse into another eagle, Aegir's daughters into waves, and Utgardsloki turning the Jormungandr, wildfire, old age, and himself into a number of different things. And, of course, nearly everything Loki did.
... I... don't know how I forgot about all those. I'm halfway through Neil Gaiman's "Norse Mythology". What the fuck, brain?

This is just great, I love listening to it.
If this proves to be true would it make the line "Can I turn into an animal?" actually something important?
I've finally started to play the game.
At the point I am in the story the only thing I'm sure of is that I fucking hate revenants, or, as I like to refer to them, "toxic undead bitches spreading irradiated poisonous shit all over the damn place".
The first proper boss fight against the Stranger feels taken straight from a comic superhero movie (in a good way) and I sincerely hope a good taste of things to come
my testosterone levels just increased by 666%
They get easier. Spam Atreus arrows on them and you'll get 'em down in no time.
Just beat the game.
Thor showing up at the very very end was pretty cool even though it takes place "years later"
I really want to see where they go with the rest of this set of games.
the endgame [sp]dark elves[/sp] are a pile of prostate cancer.
Dude I can't get past the first Valk. Whenever she does her BS where she swings her wings at you and then goes to punch you sometimes I can't dodge it. Everyone she gets done with her second wing spam I mash X to roll away and sometimes it doesn't get me far enough and she still hits me. The RNG is insane, I got her 3/4 or more and got fucked because I apparently I was a couple millimeters too close and didn't roll far enough and she managed to punch me and one shot me.
Roll to the side, not backwards.
I'll try that. I figured rolling backwards was slightly faster and I have dodged her punches before going backwards but perhaps I got lucky and hap. to also roll slightly towards the right when doing so.
Adding onto that, there will be another attack where they swing a mace at you, once again. Roll to the right. Rolling to the left will get you hit by the tailend of the hitbox and rolling any other direction will for sure get you hit.
Trust me as someone that defeated all 9 and wanted to rip my fucking hair out.
Took your advice and finally killed her after a million fucking deaths
