It's sad and everything but what is the deal with making this a national interest?
Stephen Lawrence's murder, and the failure of the initial police investigation, exposed institutional racism and corruption in the Metropolitan police, which led to big changes in the justice system. These changes ultimately allowed his killers to finally be convicted almost 20 years after his death. A national commemoration is a way of recognising the fact that, as recently as 25 years ago, black victims of crime were often failed by our justice system; and recognising the work that's been done since then, and the work that's left to do, to fix this and other race issues.
I see, thank you!
I totally agree with the first paragraph, but I strongly feel that this is a cynical action to deflect blame, especially after this comment by Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, just after suggesting that social media were to blame for the violence: "Ms Rudd said it is a "mistake" and "disservice" to communities and families to blame police numbers [for rising violence.]"
