https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/news/eldewrito-community-content Today we want to let our community know that Microsoft has initiated actions to protect its Halo intellectual property in the wake of the recent “ElDewrito” PC release. Community created content has long been a key pillar in the Halo franchise and something we have continuously sought to support – from the early beginnings of Red vs. Blue to Forge-made maps & modes to the “Halo Custom Edition” to original recent fan creations like “Installation 01.” These projects, and others like them, have one key factor in common – they fit within Microsoft’s established content usage guidelines. Back in 2014, Microsoft, 343 and Sabre Interactive partnered to develop “Halo Online” – a title that was being developed exclusively for the Russian market. The game was subsequently put on indefinite hold but Halo Online ended up in the wild beyond its intended audience and official scope, resulting in DMCA takedown notices being issued by Microsoft. As time went by, Halo Online faded and fell off the radar until the recent exposure of the .6 update shined a new light on the current ElDewrito project. While we are humbled and inspired to see the amount of passion poured into this project, the fact remains that it’s built upon Microsoft-owned assets that were never lawfully released or authorized for this purpose. As this project reverberated across the community, our team took a step back to assess the materials and explore possible avenues, while Microsoft, like any company, has a responsibility to protect its IP, code and trademarks. It’s not optional in other words.
oh fuck off, they aren't making a dime from the IP, and its the best thing to happen to halo in years. Maybe if microsoft would stop being dicks to their PC community with halo, maybe people would actually pay for an Eldwrito type game on pc. All this is going to do is piss off the pc fanbase even more.
One thing remains clear – the community really wants more Halo on PC. As we look ahead, we’re very excited about the prospects of an official classic Halo experience making its way to PC and we hope to be able to partner with the ElDewrito team and broader mod and content creation community to help inform the types of experiences and features our fans desire. While we have nothing to announce today, please know that the PC community is very important to us and top of mind as we work towards the future. Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. I still have to Halo 3 finish the fight damnit Make good ports of Halo 3, ODST, and Reach for PC and then I'll be happy.
They literally have to protect their IP or they lose the copyright.
Microsoft should do what Valve does and make them official.
So they have to take down projects that use their IP even though they're not making any money or harming their ownership of the IP at all, lest they risk losing it entirely? It's not up to them who uses their IP? I'm not well versed in copyright law but that sounds ridiculous.
please dont kill halo online please its like the last halo thing 343 hasnt injected a poopy story into or changed
Halo 3 for pc when. I just wanna finish the fight.
If they have to protect their IP, then why didn't they go after the installation 01 guys? Or any other halo mod? I remember there was some halo rts mod or something like that that was being developed a good while back that Microsoft threw a shit fit about and then they came out with Halo Wars.
That's not how that works. That's how losing your trademark works.
Didn't Microsoft literally say they didn't care as long as it wasn't monetized a few days ago?
Oh that's what I was thinking.
There’s one smaalllll problem here. Everyone has the 0.6 files now. And while there may not be more bugfixes coming, you better believe servers are staying open for this release. Honestly, this is why it’s great that they spent so much time fixing the shit out of it. So it can last when the plug got pulled. As as long as there wasn’t a kill switch for this purpose, we’re in the clear.
They better bloody not shut this shit down. Eldewrito has been the first pvp game i've been actually chill out while playing in years, and no doubt anything official will introduce things that spoil that, on top of me doubting if it'll be any good from the get go given that i've only heard bad things about halo 5.
Downloading now just in case!
For real if they make it official I will shit my pants please don't be nintendo, PLEASE
Welp, guess it hit the popularity threshold. Now we wait and see what Microsoft is gonna do now that the projects garnered enough attention to warrant action. Though given the nature of the game the worst they could do is kill some download links, shut down the master server, and possibly stop active development of it. Thousands of people have the game downloaded and you don't need the master server to host a game.
This might be because they're finally back porting a classic halo (a reach remaster) set to announce at E3, Microsoft dosen't give a fuck until it threatens one of there future projects. Halo Wars and Halo RTS mods being an example.
Installation 01 is safe because it's entirely community created. Eldewrito is an official Halo game that's been modded the shit out of.
Btw, if the master servers go down (They won't) Discord integration is in, you can do invites via that https://i.imgur.com/utLZ4Hx.png Also, suggest downloading https://github.com/ElDewrito/ElDorito just in case too.
why are people talking about trademarks eldewrito isn't halo online halo online is official, and it was designed to only work in russia eldewrito just cleans it up and makes it actually playable, they aren't using the halo trademark at all, this is just microsoft being cunts fuck them, they cant delete it from my hard drive and servers are p2p anyways so they can lick my taint, ill keep playing
I believe the problem comes from the fact that the halo online assets are distributed inside the official eldewrito download package. There might be some solution that involves the halo online assets being hosted elsewhere unaffiliated with ED while they continue to release the frontend support. Although I am not a copyright lawyer so I'm unsure how that would work. As for my opinion, I'll just repost here what I said in the videos subforum thread: Pretty fucked up considering Microsoft ignored the almost rabid cries for Halo 3 on PC for like a decade, then again when rumors of MCC coming to PC were around, then a third time when ElDewrito first emerged and they ignored it. Now that people finally have a way to play it, they decide to take action against it? What a fucking joke. Imagine ignoring people's requests for a product for over 10 years and then taking legal action against a free fan-made project that allows people to finally play the game they want. At this point it almost seems like they have a vendetta against PC gamers who want to play Halo. Before anyone says it, yes, they have a legal right to defend their IP. Does that make it any less of a completely dick move? No. If they came out and said 'we see the demand and we are going to ask ElDewrito to stop development because we are now planning to release an official version of Halo 3 for PC' that would be completely different.
please know that the PC community is very important to us Yea right. They modified protected files and redistribute them. Unless they made a client purely out of new code and keep the whole Halo Online intact as is, they will infringe on protected code/IP. Granted as you said, they can not just shut it down as long as the files are out there.
Keep in mind there's weapon alternatives in the match settings for the weapon variants that were added to Halo Online. Most of them are straight upgrades and remnants of their P2W system they'd implemented.
eldewrito is just a patch, it doesn't include the assets the assets (halo online) aren't part of eldewiro, theyre just commonly bundled together in a patcher they can go after the people providing links to the halo online files eldewrito is open source anyways, so good luck taking it down, you've just prompted hundreds to back it up and store it in advance if they try anything
The game was also published by Innova, which incorporate p2w in their titles. If anything, it's due to this business relationship and explicitly targeting the Russian market
at least this version 0.6 is pretty damn near perfect
343's Frank O'Connor on the situation: "we’re not “shutting down the mod” or going after the Eldewrito crew - we’re enacting action to remove the Halo Online code and packages from places it’s being hosted. The distinction may seem like semantics to a lot of folks, and I don’t blame them for assuming that, but to be clear, this is a legally necessary step to protect code, product, IP, trademarks and copyrights, and is not optional. We’re a publicly traded company, and we have a fiduciary and legal responsibility to our shareholders, and further, if we don’t take steps to protect it, then we actually run the legal risk of losing it - and there’s code and content in there that is still very much in use. As a company, we spend a lot of time, effort and resources to support, amplify and enable our community creators - we have a simple set of rules that are generous and fair, that as long as they are abided by, we’re happy to help with and in some cases, promote. Halo Online code and content is not within those rules. I hope nobody on this site thinks anyone is happy about this - at one end of the spectrum, it’s sad to see folks’ hard work and effort be sunsetted, and on the other, all the people who do this stuff are human. Nobody takes joy in this kind of work or responsibility. It’s simply a necessary part of being a publicly traded company in the US. If anyone wishes to send death threats, please direct those and Scholarly Legal Opinions to @franklez. I won’t be responding to this thread, because effectively I’ve said everything I can say here, but my one ask - a favor - is that folks try to contextualize this within real world circumstances, and not apply intent or evil where none exists." Yea. It was fun playing with you! Eldewrito has been the only PVP game that I have had super good fun in. I'm sure it'll go on even if they try and shut it down since everyone has all the files and stuff. I really hope Microsoft lets the project go on. The Eldewrito team has been awesome.
People need to stop spreading this garbage. It's never been true.
