Tl;dr in the past, the driver and car were weighed together to meet a minimum weight. As a result, drivers had become unhealthily skinny to reduce their own weight, which meant that more ballasting could be placed in their F1 car, but in an optimal location that improved weight distribution.
The new rules for 2019 will specify that the drivers and their gear must each weigh at least 80 kilograms. But do watch the video anyways.
I love this guys videos, they're very informative and some of his opinion pieces are pretty well thought out. I especially liked his video on HALOs and very disappointed at some people in the F1 community for thinking aesthetics should take a precedence over the lives of the drivers. I still remember seeing Ayrton's death as a small boy - that shit sucks balls, man.
Yeah I agree with the HALOs. Chain Bear made a pretty good point about them; if an FIA committee was tasked with determining whether F1 should have HALOs or not, and it came down to a vote and they decided against the implementation of HALOs, but then a driver goes on to pass away in a crash in the very next season whereas a HALO would have saved them, then the people in that committee would feel that the blame rests on their shoulders. No one wants to be the person responsible for the otherwise preventable death of a Lewis Hamilton, so you can see why they implemented the HALOs.
They don’t even look that bad anyways, and I’m sure the teams will implement a more-aesthetic yet still practical design in 2019.
