Apparently, this is the section of the prayer that raised Ryan's ire: "As legislation on taxes continues to be debated this week and next, may all members be mindful that the institutions and structures of our great nation guarantee the opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle," Conroy said. "May their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans," he added. I guess praying that the tax bill benefit those who are actually struggling, and not just the richest of the rich, is somehow naughty.
I didn't know there was a House chaplain. America's "separation of church and state" principle seems to have a lot of grey areas
It's more people don't actually understand what it means. You can't use religion in law making. That's all it means.
Seems like a dick move. The chaplain sounds like a real nice dude.
As if we needed more proof that Paul Ryan is a poor excuse for a human being. Conroy seems well liked by both sides, so hopefully they can bring him back or something. He certainly doesn't deserve to get fired just because Ryan had a hissy fit.
What with habeas corpus and the amendment being ignored, America ignoring its own constitution is nothing new, although this technically doesn't violate the First Amendment. It's just that it appears to violate the spirit of it.
Doesn't mean it isn't used that way. They just word it, 'justify' it in fanciful ways to slip it around that clause.
members of congress are allowed to be religious and seek spiritual/religious guidance from a cleric, the cleric isnt allowed to tell them what to implement in government though
would love to see conspiratards try to justify this decision. Since JFK is basically the holy grail of conspiracy theories.
gotta love how there's republicans dog whistling for a southern baptist to bless them with the prosparity doctrine. Pretty sure someone's going to just slip sooner or later and say "we need someone more protestanty and baptisty..."
Ryan's days in congress are numbered as it is, so it's possible the new speaker could try.
If he's anything like military chaplains then he gives guidance to all faiths and the faithless and does not push his religion unless it is with a member who has spiritual questions.
