Basically a lot of people have been using background images without avatars, which is fine. However, once you apply an avatar you can't remove it. This can be somewhat fixed by just uploading an empty image, but then that causes inconsistencies on stuff like alerts, where some people with no avatar either have the bell icon or nothing at all.

It'd be nice if either you can press a button to remove your avatar, or have the site recognize a blank avatar to correct the inconsistencies.
Tbh every time I see someone with a visible pixel on their avatar I mentally scream
