The main thing I think to look for is patterns, and what's actually being transmitted.

If we manage to decode a transmission containing all the prime numbers, that's something to shit our pants and start screaming about, but just random white noise with no discernible information is probably just a cosmic event such as a blackhole or neutron star doing it's own thing.
