Funny, I thought Republicans were retiring in large numbers from Congress because they'd gotten their hands dirty and were afraid of getting bagged along with the big D in the Mueller probe.
Hey that's the guy who responded like a robot to the roy moore scandal, anyone have that? Also people are resigning because of scandals, age, or in the case of Flake they're too moderate for the modern gop.
Everyone has their own breaking point. I imagine some are tired of dealing Trump's crap.
How many of these resignations are in seats that weren't going to be up for election this November?
I imagine it's a mixture of "oh fuck, I'm going to get caught" and "It's all down hill from here, I may as well leave on a high note".
At a glance this kind of comment may seem funny, but it's actually very serious. Not because Republicans are at serious risk of being assassinated (they aren't) but because the victimhood narrative gives them a convenient excuse to retire in droves without owning up to their disastrous policies and neo-fascism. They aren't retiring by choice, you see. They're retiring because they were forced out by violent leftists—or so they would like their base to believe. Do not be surprised when Trump and his cabal of sycophants pick up this ball and run with it.
Huh. You'd think, if they were worried about assassination, they'd be in favor of gun control legislation, no?
Generally speaking if you're planning on assassinating someone you're probably going to find a way regardless.
That would also increase assassination risk.
More like with their party getting turned into a complete joke by Trump and Co and the blue wave forming on the horizon they see where all this shit is going, the Republican party is fucked, how fucked depends on the results of the Mueller probe.
...are you implying that mad gun owners would take up arms and commit murder, implying people would find a somehow more effective way than pointing and shooting, or something I'm missing entirely? Because If you're making an argument that not having guns makes it easier for people to commit murder then I'm not seeing it. If you're saying that gun owners will commit murder over having their guns taken away, that's a dangerous line to tread.
I was actually aiming at a joke. He was saying "wouldn't gun control decrease it?" and if that were the case then bread would increase assassination risk.
What he's saying is that trying to push gun control would piss people off and there would be more threats of assassination as a result.
I honestly find this really worrisome. Dutifully elected representatives leaving office for fear of violence is a huge blow to the democratic structure of our country. If they were coming up with "excuses to hide their dirty hands" like so many of you are dismissing this as, there are far better ones such as retiring for age. This really isn't something to be laughed at, regardless of party affiliation.
do gun owners have like, firearm gaydar that allows them to detect assassins with concealed weapons? like I'm trying to understand in what universe that statement makes any sense at all
tbh, a political party that is known for screwing over minorities, extreme corporate lobbyism, corruption, and electing president mc-chucklefuck as the leader of our nation. Its not surprising... Not justifying the violence, it just isn't surprising anymore...
These are the same people who canceled all their town halls because they were afraid of the "paid liberal protesters" (e.g. all the citizens who were pissed off at them). They're cowards looking for an excuse and you can't really trust anything they say tbh
"I am leaving the public office for fears of being assassinated by the leftist mobs of insane Antifa terrorists! HEED WELL MY WARNING AMERICANS! VOTE REPUBLICAN!" *Pulls diamond ripcord, unfurling golden parachute* "HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED"
I won't say it's a good thing, but Republicans brought this on themselves.
Honestly if you have an actual assassin trying to kill you your only hope is luck unless you have an extensive security detail.
I mean in fairness, they're probably realizing that people are definitely not a fan of what they're trying to do behind our backs, and that people are becoming angry...
Wouldn't firearm gaydar just be uh radar? I know everything longer than it is thick is automatically phallic but come on.
Actually, all of the reasons they've given for retiring so far have been exactly that. Age, spending more time with the family, changing their focus, etc. The reason this is so laughable is because it was the answer to the question "Wait, why are so many Republicans jumping ship?" Someone finally pointed out the elephant in the room, and this guy's response was to play the victim card. Bull shit.
That's an incredibly naive view to hold. Believing Republicans are leaving office out of fear of assassination is like believing Russia when they insist they totally definitely didn't do this thing and in fact it's obviously just a false flag to make them look bad. History shows you have little to no reason to believe them because it's exceedingly likely to just be more projection, one of their favorite diversionary tactics.
Even if that was true, this is just the consequence of their bullshit that they've been at for years, they're the ones messing with the democratic process of the country with Russia, they're the ones that have been polarizing the country for years with propaganda from Fox News and Co, they're the ones that have been turning people against each other for power. The republicans control the House, Congress and the WH and they've barely accomplished jack shit after YEARS of saying, basically, that they'd do a better job than the democrats. Obama is gone, Hillary is gone, there's no scapegoat for their bullshit anymore, it was all fun and games while the democrats were in power but now they fear the rhetoric they've been pushing for years is coming to bite them in the ass. It sucks yes but this is the result of their actions, they're playing victim but there's no one to blame for damaging democracy but them.
You're literally victim blaming.
It's weird to have more power for your party than it has had for a century and still play the victim
Political power is irrelevant if they have an honest fear of being killed.
You do realize there's a difference between "I'm not at all surprised this happened," and "they deserved it," right?
