I am not sure which version is better, so I'm posting both of them. The DOF looks bad because I tried to use the focus blur in GIMP and it didn't work as well as I expected it to.
I also spend a few hours trying to come up with a good title, but this is the best I could come up with.

the problem with manual blur is that it creates an awful rim around a person
and if you get rid of that by using a different layer it makes this really really pixel pin point outline around them that still makes it look weird
If you want to do manual blur, I really wouldn't recommend using GIMP, PS's tool for that works much better.

I don't doubt that Photoshop is much better at it than GIMP is, but I've unfortunately never had the patience to learn PS.
