They had apparently tried to cross on their own, separate from the caravan and not at an official border crossing, so they got nabbed for attempting to illegally enter the US. Support groups working with the caravan told them that crossing the border outside of official crossing sites was illegal and not to do it.
I guess they decided to try their luck with sneaking in rather than play by the rules and hope the Trump administration would uphold its responsibilities to receive and consider asylum seekers. It didn't work.
