https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2018/05/01/president-trump-says-hes-seriously-thinking-creating-space-force/569138002/ Could we really end up with a new branch of the military? As he presented the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy to the Army football team for its victory over both Air Force and Navy last year, President Trump suggested Tuesday that there could be a sixth branch in the making. "We're actually thinking of a sixth — and that would be the Space Force," he said, after calling out the existing military branches. "Does that make sense? Because we are getting very big in space, both militarily and for other reasons and we are seriously thinking of the Space Force." It's an idea he has floated before. In March, while speaking to members of the military in San Diego, the president said his national strategy for space "recognizes that space is a war-fighting domain just like the land, air and sea." http://launch.newsinc.com/share.html?trackingGroup=93075&siteSection=inform_oembed&videoId=33771705
Wouldn't this just drastically increase the risk of Kessler Syndrome happening? That's really the biggest threat to worry about right now when it comes to orbital defence - if anyone is stupid enough to start destroying things in orbit, everyone is going to get royally fucked if we don't find a way to clean up space junk soon.
I'm suddenly reminded of a Twitter post I've seen somewhere: "Dammit all, we have a president who wants a Space Army and bangs porn stars and I STILL hate him."
We infinite warfare now
Isn't this against the Star Wars agreement? Hmm Apparently not: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty Only WMDs are banned from space. Conventional weapons are not.
I mean, if I get to be a space marine, sure I guess...
Come on they have to call those soldiers space marines right? It just seems so fitting after all this time. Not to mention it would be hell of a title to hold.
I want to hang myself when I read the utter retardation Trump utters on a regular basis. I have always loved space and wish we invested in it more, but can humanity not have one thing we do that doesn't involve the intention to kill?! I bet the 'Space Force' would have orders of magnitude more funding than NASA too. I honestly think people deserve to go extinct sometimes when I look at governments' priorities.
The Russian's were shitting themselves when we showed off the shuttles in the 80's, because to them they viewed them as reusable military weapons delivery systems for low earth orbit. I really don't think they'd be keen to the US creating a legitimate Space Force now, along with China becoming a space power I could see this as a precursor to a military space race with them as well.
oops I accidentally jettisoned all these titanium rods above your capital city, my bad!
Cant wait for elons spacex militia to fight the incel alliance over the mars colony.
Still way too many steps away from a Steel Rain doctrine.
Dude imagine telling your friends "yeah Im space marine" and not being a liar Also as long as it helps fund space exploration, im fine with it.
Gyrojet industry will make a large new comeback as recoil-less weapons are needed in space
Well, getting the military involved is one sure fire way to increase funding in the field of space research. There could be some real neato technological advancements if this came to pass.
Look, I don't believe Trump has it in him to achieve any of his wild space ideas. And look, I'm not saying this would in any way be a good idea. But what I am saying is, probably the only positive thing that could come of Trump's presidency, in any timeline, is crazy space hijinks. I think we all need to admit that.
I really don't like how he talks. He's always "seriously considering" something.
Doesn't the Air Force already have their space command organization? If so, why make this. Just seems like pointlessness for trump to appear in another headline.
oh no. that means shitting tungsten rods on people you don't like from space is completely possible
Let's not start a race to militarize space please.
Why a whole space force when there's no conflict in space, why not just invest in rods from God
All I want investment in kinetic bombardment via railguns.
i knew Trump was the God-Emperor all along... never doubted you
Well the Air Force started out as a department of the Army. It was the Army Air Corps during WWII. So it might make sense to eventually break a Space Force off if we had a great need for it. Right now we can't even launch American astronauts on American rockets so unless the Space Forces mission was simply to invest heavily in space, I don't really know if it would make sense. It's like making the Navy before you built the shipyard.

I hope they call it Space Corps instead, it can belong to the Air Force since they already do space-y stuff.
It does make sense to have something like a space coast guard if and when Musk's vision of the future is realized.
If we have to have a wing of our military dedicated to space, can we please opt out of SPACE FORCE. I'd really like it if one of our military branches didn't sound like a Z-Movie from the 1990s that went directly to VHS and was sold by exactly one Blockbuster before being dropped after a week of no rentals from its laughably bad box art and ridiculous premise.
Its going to happen no matter what...
As someone mentioned before, Kessler syndrome is the big problem here, and Trump has again proved himself borderline-retarded with his priorities. Kessler syndrome is the principle whereby debris, even tiny pieces of debris, in orbit can collide with other objects in space and break chunks off them. With no air to slow them down, these flying bits will reach ridiculous speeds, obliterate other things, and the cycle will continue, until it is literally impossible to go into orbit without being shredded. Humanity will lose all its satellites and never, ever be able to put anything in orbit or launch a mission to leave our planet again. So what do you think will happen if nations start turning the orbit around our planet into a place to fight their wars? China once shot down one of their own satellites with a missile as a show of force and got slammed by the rest of the world for it. I wouldn't expect a half-senile idiot like the President to get it.
