Sensationalist article. The Eurofighter fleet is currently undergoing refits to update its avionics and the contracted supplier of a component needed for said updates vanished.
They do have an equal number of airworthy BF109's, so not all is lost.
They still fly those? Damn
No lmao. There are 4 privately owned airworthy BF109s in Germany, which I'm assuming is what he's referring to. BF109s aren't in military service anywhere even in a ceremonial or demonstrator role.
That's what I thought, I was like what the fuck? Too lazy to have google'd it.
They are freaking beautiful though

Sorry for offtopic, I'll return to War Thunder
With the rise of low intensity conflicts we should bring back propeller aircraft ala the Bronco.
I just read an article in a magazine about how they're basically taking updating current eurofighter models to their absoulte limit, and not to mention it's not like German has any defense worries at all at the moment. Talk about sensationalism.
It's kind of unbelievable the funding and technology we poured into those contracts.
Ultimately we benefit from the technical research long term as far as being a military power, but fielding what we did against who we did is just flatly overkill.
super tucano or bust!
I want to privately own one of those some day
I'm sorry mate - the FW190 is prettier, hands down. I also think the Spitfire 9 and beyond are quite beautiful, but I am biased.
who even operates strategic heavy bombers anymore but the US and Russia?
Obviously the UK's Vulcan bomber is no longer in service. That video is from an air show.
Now is the time for Britain to strike at strategic factories to get back for the bombing of London!!
I know this is sarcasm but the germans still have massive problems with the sheer number of undetonated ordnance that is still in their cities and is found whenever construction work is going on.
Also if we did bomb their factories we'd be bombing our eurofighters with our own eurofighters since we like developed them (in an overbudget, behind-schedule way that meant france was able to bail and develop a carrier-capable and STOL capable aircraft for a smaller budget)
I can't wrap my mind around Eurofighter and old being in the same paragraph. I feel old as shit now.
Stretegic bombers are incredibly useful, but they're also expensive.
I wonder who would win:
100 x BF109 (Or other WW2 aircraft)
1x Any 5th gen Fighter Jet
5th gen, in the blink of an eye. Empty out missile stores to take out ~10 of them, then just gun the rest down. Biggest problem would be ammunition, since I recall modern fighters carrying relatively small amounts of gun-ammo.
A more interesting case is back when the US found out that attack helicopters stand a solid chance against ground-attack planes like the A10. Experiment set up to prove that helicopters needed protection to avoid them getting SU-25'd in the blink of an eye, but it turned out helicopters are shockingly good at air-to-air self-defense.
109s.
109s deploy sparsely so as to win a battle of attrition rather than direct confrontation.
5th gen takes out many, but eventually runs out of fuel or ammunition. Remaining 109s are stalking the airstrip where the 5th gen lands for fuel or ammunition. Checkmate swanky modern technology.
Eurofighter is still relatively young in aircraft terms, and Tranche 3 aircraft are up at the top end of fourth gens, it's no F-35 or F-22 but it gets the job done
