I think I’m out of the loop, what’s with all the positive North Korea news lately? Are they actually turning over a new leaf?
They have secured their place in not ending up like Libya or Iraq, which has been the point of their nuclear program and general hostility, for the world to take them seriously. The international community has started to do that, so now they are progressing on to other things, whatever that is.
After all the dick waving and threats of reducing Washington to ash, they're just cooperating? Whats the catch..?
I figured this would be a tense topic in these negotiations and wasn't expecting to see such positive results so soon.
They're willing to give up their nuclear arsenal with basically nothing in return.
They've shown they have the knowledge and capabilities to make them, it just takes one, if a war were to start they would have another in a heartbeat.
An agreement to disarm their nuclear arsenal will force them to have nuclear regulatory agencies crawling their ass. Also no they wouldn't have one in a heartbeat its not so simple.
It's fine. They've already secretly shipped off one of their nukes to Russia so there won't be anything to find. Then they'll just have it shipped back with the agencies leave.
Getting it back would be an incredible nightmare for them and the moment someone spotted it, they'd be completely fucked losing anything they might have gained out of this.
I reckon they want economic development. They've been moving at a snail's pace, and the pressure applied by NGOs is probably causing tension inside the country. Regimes must balance between bribing officials so they don't kill you, with the demands of the people. The elites are probably having kids, so that circle is getting larger, and NGOs have been smuggling shit like South Korean TV shows into the country to get lower classes to see what life outside North Korea is - that would create tension in the populace. If they got even a relatively small injection into the economy, they could keep both the elites and the people happy. Sure, they can always print USD, but I'm going to assume it's getting harder and harder to trade using their fake bills - the bills themselves might be better than what the BEP makes, but if you're dealing with a North Korean that's offering you a suitcase full of dollars, you can guess it's probably fake.
Russia's been sneaking them stuff to break their sanctions for months and perhaps even years.
Yeah, and we've known about it.
I mean, if their goal was to reduce Washington to ash, Trump's just about got 'em beat metaphorically speaking.
I would rate optimistic but that's no longer a rating.
The reason North Korea was developing nuclear weapons was as a deterrent to invasion and regime change. Say what you want about their leadership but Kim Jong-Un has no interest in delivering a nuke to South Korea, Japan, or maybe Guam and then be entirely annihilated in turn. The fact that their stance towards diplomacy changed drastically after meeting with the leader of China tells me that something big happened at the meeting; my guess would be China guaranteeing North Korea's sovereignty in return for reversing the destabilization their nuclear test and rocket launches have caused in the region. China has it's own ambitions in the area, after all. A nice side effect of this is that Trump is willing to meet with Kim on the DMZ itself, which accomplishes one of the geopolitical goals they have had since the 90's; recognizance on even terms, preferably the a US president. Throw in the fact that they have scaled back their rhetoric in the past in exchange for economic benefits being returned and the fact that their biggest offer (denuclearizing) is easily reversible according to US intelligence and you can see there are a lot of reasons for North Korea to come to the table now.
I still smell bullshit Imagine having a neighbor for the last 20 years throwing shit in your yard, occasionally tearing down your mail box, threatening you every week, calling the HoA on you about any infraction, SUDDENLY being the nicest person in the world to you It makes no sense
That neighbour suddenly became so friendly after a visit from his sugar daddy/bdsm master, there's not a lot to think about here
Well, countries aren't people so.
This all comes soon after (allegedly) a nuclear test went wrong and exploded their only underground facility, presumably killing most - if not all - of their nuclear scientists. This is my speculation, but that may have been soon before or after Xi Jinping gave them an ultimatum and threatened to cut off their aid (and allow an invasion) unless they started cooperating. So then they 'agreed' to stop all nuclear testing... right. I don't think they made a choice, I think they lost their gun.
I am calling it - NK lost it's nuclear programme and has to cave in. Otherwise I knows It won't survive. Also I think KJU is in a power struggle.
