"Cobra Kai takes place 34 years after the original film and follows a "down-and-out Johnny Lawrence, who seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now successful Daniel LaRusso, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi. The show is about two men addressing past demons and present frustrations the only way they know how: through karate."

Alright, you may be turned off by it being done by youtube red but the quality of this show is very good and i highly recommend it. They've really got a hit here with this show.
What they've done for johnny and daniel's characters has been phenomenal. I'm currently on episode 7, i'll give my full thoughts after i've seen it all the way through but i'm telling you guys this is a solid follow up to the first film.
Alright i've just got watching it all, and holy shit what a climax, not gonna say a word but season 2 is going to be fucking crazy with what they've set-up.
As for the whole first season in general, it was very damn good. You got to see more of johnny's perspective and his backstory and they really fleshed his character out, plus episode 9 is a very big treat for fans, not gonna say why but it's probably favorite episode out of the whole season the finale coming in second.
All in all damn good show.
Yeah, I've been hearing some pretty decent things about this, although I don't want to get YouTube Red for it.
Really enjoyed it. I like how they twisted the original character dynamic of the movies and made it very unpredictable. If you have't tired youtube red yet, I think its free for the 1st month. This show is definitely worth trying it for.
Man, this series is actually really good! This kinda makes me want to do something similar with the film The Wizard. Maybe have Luke and Corey become indie game developers or something like that!
This feels like a true sequel to the Karate Kid, and shares the exact same style as it. It's packed with fun cliches and bad-ass peaks of action in between solid character development that goes way beyond the simple black and white rivalry in the original film. It leaves you not really knowing who to root for in the end, which is exactly what it's going for.
I finished this last night, it's really really good. I was already hyped for it since the trailers were revealed and it exceeded beyond my expectations. I love how nuanced everyone are, Johnny & Daniel themselves in particular, and there was actually no real 'bad guy' so to speak, but rather just conflicting values but both mean well. I think it carried the original's theme of 'no bad students, only bad teachers' pretty nicely too. Definitely recommend everyone to watch. I'd gladly pay $9.99 for YouTube Red alone for this, but the free 30 day trial is more than enough to watch the entire series.
I love the nods towards all those 'Daniel was the real bully' theories/jokes and how they integrated it into Johnny's character, particularly that moment where he talks about the first film with Miguel, without actually going full ham and making Daniel actually a jerk/bully in the actual plot.
I really like how they handled the role reversal here too, Daniel's still means well but is definitely troubled without Mr. Miyagi, and Johnny while still a jerk, definitely grew up to be a more caring albeit bitter person who uses his Cobra Kai philosophy and teachings for the best.
Miguel is probably my 3rd favorite character out of all of this, just below Johnny & Daniel themselves. His transformation of being a bullied kid ala Daniel from the first film into being more ruthless and cold like a young Johnny was a nice twist.
Robby was a nice surprise as well, and even though it was almost obvious that once he was working for Daniel it'd be his moment of turning to a new leaf as well, I like how he acts as a contrast to Miguel and really sets up the final battle nicely.
My only complaints about the series is how much it relied on poor communication and misunderstandings from the root of the conflicts. Though this is a really minor complaint and at the very least it did fit all the character's traits, particularly how much of a hothead Daniel is and how prideful Johnny can be. I just hope this gets noted in the next season and become a source of another character development.
When Daniel & Johnny goes drinking together in episode 9, that has to be my favorite part. Makes it all the more heartbreaking after Johnny finds out where Robby is. I really hope they get their Rocky 3 moment eventually in the series.
Overall once again a surprisingly really solid series. It's more than just a nostalgic trip, and I think it really manages to stand on its own while also being a really faithful sequel to the original film.
Quite suprised to hear decent things about it, the trailer makes it look so bad.
this is still cannon yes?

More canon than the fucking cartoon series
Hawk is my favorite character, was just a joy to see him on screen for some reason. Even when he became a bad guy.
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

How did this show end up being as good as it was? If this wasn't on YouTube Red, this would have pulled in amazing ratings based on the views for the first two episodes alone.
Seriously, a continuation of the Karate Kid franchise has no reason to be this good. Here I thought I was getting into some lowbrow nostaglia wank, and instead was blown away by a surprisingly well written, witty true 80's movie callback that actually deconstructed the original premise in a way that wasn't "hurr hurr wouldn't it like, totally be funny if Daniel LaRusso was actually the dickhead?"
I'm a little over halfway through the season and the first episode got me hooked, which is surprising. In every aspect, this show is better in every way that it deserves to be, from the editing, to the characters and the story. Every episode ends in a way that you want to watch more, so I got to give a lot of credit to the pacing. So far I highly recommend this show. I'm pretty much hooked enough that I'll finish this season by the end of the day.
watched it all in one viewing. terrific effort.
the only thing that has bothered me, is that larusso started being a dweeb from karate kid 3 and continues into this one.
yet in karate kid 2 he literally has a fight to the death. why did he become so insufferable from 2 into 3.
The most popular youtube red series gears toward teens,
has
a grown man punch a bunch of kids,
under age drinking,
and it's youtube promotional reference involves a character cyber bulling
I love it.

James & Mike watched the series and they really liked it
Just finished episode 5. I really, really like it. Has a lot of really cheesy lines, but the kind of cheesy lines that are really hype which I like. It's not lame karate. It's Cobra Kai. Fucking sick. My one complaint so far is that I'm just really tired of the typical high school spiel of bullies and nerds, but Johnny and Daniel being layered make up for that. The music and editing are really good too like when Daniel kicked that boba tea. But what I like the most is how it was able to keep the spirit of the original. Like they really understood what made the first movie great but they were still able to update it for a modern audience. I know that sounded like a bunch of review buzzwords but fuck off eh. I liked it.

this saga is fucking amazing. I don't care if it isn't the best thing ever made, it's that the people involved respect the core of what made the original Karate Kid so good and it is beautiful to watch the same characters. fucking sensai creese returning is golden, but what will destroy my brain is if this guy returns in the finale:

As funny as the first season so far!
Holy shit... that ending
I am confused at why Robbie did what he did
It was an alright season, the ending was pretty good and sets up for a more interesting season 3.
Can someone explain to me wtf kind of beer bottle everyone is drinking out of on this show I've never seen a bottle like that in my life
