I'm a noob solo player and was wondering what the best format for a house is.
Be creative, a good base is one that looking from the outside makes you think it will be a bitch to raid.
Always have an airlock, and add a window next to your front door to check for door campers (it is smart to have more than 1 door to the outside).
Add things like secret basements and focus on protection your cupboard/loot room at all cost.
Also, don't forget that blowing up doors is the most cost effective way to raid at the moment, so add lots of them!
PS: a good way to improve your base is calculating the minimum ammount of resources to raid your base, and adjust from there.
Also, if you're playing on Official servers, don't build smart; build thick. Everybody just uses cheats to locate chests/TC anyways, and will blow straight to it. Clever placement won't help you there.
Also, loads of shotgun traps. Loads. Throw as many of the bastards as you can down. Another helpful thing to do is to stuff garage doors on every square, and just keep them rolled up while you play. Roll then down when you log off, a garage door is twice as strong as a sheet for just the cost of two gears and a few more metal frags. But Shotgun Traps are great; they can really slow and deter raiders who'll have to shoot them out. Leave 30-50 shells in each one so they don't just drain them, and put them in smart, unexpected areas.
If they know where the chests are they'll probably know where the traps are. My advice, don't play official, go community servers or modded servers, if you're alone build small and smart, clans won't really bother with you, and better than having 1 base is having loot spread through your bases, provided they're not scattered around in a huge map.
I agree, but I still prefer to build "thick and small" even on non-official, I always assume someone might have ESP (or the other "see through" hack).
Even if they see the traps, but the traps are equally spread out to cover everything - it will delay them a bit.
search "Creative" in the server menu and go play around building for free my dude
also - search youtube for "solo base" or "starter base Rust" - plenty of videos there...
