1:30 in and I have to stop him right there; there is no way in hell he can claim it has fallen out of western anime consciousness and is certainly not limited to "hardcore" anime fans.
Considering the fact that akira is the only anime Ive ever watched, I have to second that
Honestly Akira is probably more well regarded outside hardcore anime circles because of how often its cited as an influential sci-fi movie.
I enjoyed his commentary on the contrast between modern day anime vs. films of this time and also with western animation. Finally was able to put into words all the craziness and grotesqueness I associate with these types of films.
looks like urusei yatsura to me
second gif looks like Ranma, last one is definitely Dirty Pair
the second one might be Ranma ½ and the last one is Dirty Pair, don't know about the other 2 though
1st is Yurusei 2nd is Ranam 1/2 3rd is Maris Chojo 4th is Dirty Pair
Yeah I've never had any interest in getting into anime but I have the soundtrack on vinyl.
Except it has. Being head first in the ass of anime doesn't lend clarity. The fact is Anime is still niche, because YOU (you being a die hard anime fan, not you the poster) stick your dick in it all day doesn't mean anything. Akira occupies the place it does because it's generally not considered anime by the west. Are people attempting/failing over and over to adapt Bubblegum Crisis? Gundam? KLK? Gurren Lagann? Nope. They are not. The two movies that were converted over the last three years fell flat on their faces, despite the supposed standing of their respective properties in "pop culture", and only half of that equation was "they were badly made". Justice League was badly made and took in Anime is still niche. Anime, Mange and the entirety of licensing profits gross thereof came out out about 1.3 billion last year, which means the entirety of japanese animated output, including non-animated marketing and merchandising made about 85% of one blockbuster western movie in first run ticket sales only, not accounting second venue and licensing profits. Furthermore the vast majority of that profit did not come from the shit you're stealing form a discord after it runs on Crunchy Roll, it came from anime that doesn't even run in the west because it's for japanese preschoolers and elementary kids. Akira was the first to penetrate the west in absolution as a cultural landmark. Before Akira you had to buy your shit at animation and fantasy conventions or order with a completely fucked markup through an importer, or literally "have a guy" in japan. Now, you can just pick up Darling in the Franxx at wal*mart right? Nope, no you can not. But you can buy Akira, because enough people watched or remember it, people who don't watch anime despite having direct access to it on Netflix and Hulu. There are very very few anime titles that are considered of universal appeal anymore which is why fancervix is the flavor du jour now. In order to stay relevant popular and profitable past thee teen years, japanese animation has become fetishized out the wazoo, and there are very very few titles that don't fall under that net, and less of them every year.
My dad watched Speed Racer as a kid in the late 60s.... i think the western world knew of japanimation... right?
It was pretty limited outside of Astro Boy and Speed Racer, which were more for kids anyway. The point being it was animation for an adult audience.
transformers as well, but nobody knew about Legend of the Overfiend except people who dove deep into penthouses international section of films around late 80s. bty dirty pair was shown which is a great series, even the remake dirty pair flash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z53R0LoeV8c
I just love the fact I recognize every piece of music posted in the background of the video because I listen to them all on a daily basis.
I'm not saying you're full of shit but only reporting my own circle of experience but the only time I've ever heard of Akira was within a group of people at a college anime club. I've never heard non-Anime fans discuss or even mention it. I would never say "only hardcore anime fans, only people with at least 20 figmas discuss it," but I've only seen people who were into anime bring it up at all.
I will sa that it depends, I know plenty of non-anime fans who were teenagers/young adults in the 80s who saw Akira. And then my peer group who were teenagers/young adults when Full Metal was on Adult Swim. I have friends who didn't even realize these shows were Japanese, they thought Gundam/FMA/Dragonball were just American shows.
I wouldn't really consider myself an anime fan and Akira's my favorite movie, make of that what you will
