Touhou Project, also simply known as "Touhou" is a game series created by Team Shanghai Alice, which actually isn't a team but a single asian alcoholic, as seen above. The most notable thing about the series are the insane difficulty of the shooter games, the mountain of fan-made content and - of course - that the cast is almost entirely girls.
Deep Lore
Touhou games, Literature, and whatever other type of content you find usually takes place in a location called "Gensokyo" which is populated by Youkai and Humans - Youkai are essentially various types of fantasy beings, such as fairies, ghosts, vampires, tengu.. you name it. The story of the games mostly revolve around incidents happening in Gensokyo, such as usually calm youkai going berserk on humans or the seasons going rampant.
What about the Games?
As said before, most of the games are vertical 2d Shooters which have 6 Stages each with 6 Bosses, a few mini-bosses and an Extra stage to test your skills. They are known for their tough difficulty, especially on the hardest difficulty, Lunatic. To get a good idea of how a Lunatic run can look like;

However, the Touhou games also offer a variety of 2d Fighters, the first few being traditional, "on the ground" fighters, while the rest ended up being "floaters" - fighters in which you can "jump down". Gameplay of the newest one in Story mode can be found here:

What needs to be noted is that Touhou games are all officially only in japanese, with the exception being the newest fighter, Antinomy of Common Flowers. However the western Community has developed patches, alongside of an automatic patcher to translate the games into a variety of languages.
As far as buying the games as someone from the west goes, you'll either have to travel to Japan and take part in a con/find the games in a local store, or you will either have to ship them from an online store. Luckily as of late, the games have started to appear in Steam which makes them a lot more accessible for people outside of Japan.
