Here’s where we have to do some math. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bezos’ net worth on Jan. 1 was $99 billion. On May 1, it was $132 billion, meaning it rose $33 billion. If you divide that difference by the 120 days in that period, you find that he made $275 million a day. Divide that by 24 hours in a day to get about $11.5 million per hour, the equivalent of roughly $191,000 per minute or — the clincher — $3,182 every second. I wonder how many beeps his armband gives off when he's behind schedule due to the latest promotion.
And yet, rather than make some effort to give people more livable wages, he spends it on his space tourism side project.
Ignoring that we're talking about wealth and not actual income, why are people attacking Blue Origin of all things? It's not just "space tourism", they're working on some really powerful rockets that can be used for much else. And what's wrong with space tourism anyway?
God damn it... https://i.imgur.com/1HlWEGR.png
i mean, he's creating more jobs at least
Exactly. The rocket Blue Origin is currently developing for orbital flights (not the tourism one) is supposed to have a heavier lifting capacity than the Falcon Heavy, mainly due to its exceptionally powerful engine design.
It's less that he's putting his money in it and more that his reason for doing so is a giant pile of dung.
Because he can be helping his own employees first but nah. There are people suffering for his greed and such. Space exploration is great and all but is it worth it at the expense of these people? Because that's what's happening. And btw don't even think for a minute that colonies in space will benefit anyone other than upper class folk.
I wonder what kind of social model an income cap would have, really begs the question.
This feels like really awful logic because they're jobs that involve the employee's being totally fucked over in basically every way you can be fucked over
We should all just see how high of a number we can contribute to these billionaires by donating directly It's not like the income inequality is actually going to go away, might as well go full bore with it /s
Tbh idk why you would work for Amazon at all when other places like UPS with that want to same labor/skill set pay more, have better working conditions and are unionized.
Every time I read sentiments like this, I feel like they need to be fully qualified a bit, by saying "work for Amazon at a warehouse." The reason I feel like that needs to be qualified is because I have a friend who works for Amazon as a programmer, and while it's definitely a stressful job (due to be highly competitive), he definitely isn't getting underpaid, between just making straight-up bank and the absurd benefits that Amazon's programming positions offer. When it comes to warehouse jobs, I can definitely see the argument for Amazon not being a place to want to work. But in the programming sphere, I'd probably put Amazon up there in terms of Apple, Google, and Microsoft in terms of prestige.
I wouldn't mind a mild slowdown to space technology if it means our means of living right now on the only rock in the universe we're so guaranteed to be born on weren't as shit.
i mean, you're free to choose
I dont have kids, so i do, most often others do not. And many people also simply can't find better jobs period.
How slow does space technology need to go? Take a look at NASA's budget - it ain't exactly enormous. And what's this idea that space technology can do nothing to improve our lives?
https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/realistic_criteria.png I'll stop posting this comic when it stops being relevant
Maybe consider making more thorough arguments than epic xkcd zingers. Nobody's saying stop space exploration, but it strikes a sour note when a company with famously shitty conditions has its CEO, the richest man on the planet by a significant margin, make their paycheck every 10 seconds. And it's something he clearly isn't interested in changing, but he can still easily fund Blue Origin mostly by himself. I think this worship of technological progress is insane. I don't want space exploration at the cost of people's utter misery working in his bloody warehouses, an equilibrium can exist.
Space technology can improve our lives, sure, but unless space technology magically puts more money on the table of every single person on the planet who's not getting paid what they're owed, then it's not solving one of the most significant issues of this dawning century. If your job is to look to the stars and find a way there, good for you, keep on doing what you're good at. If your job is to spearhead an absurdly lucrative company that requires people to break their backs for you, then looking to the stars when shit's fucked partly due to your own company's work policies is just shitty. And frankly I'm not too sure I like the idea of Jeff "Piss in a jar for minimum wage" Bezos also getting himself a nice fat share of what little space industry there is right now. He's not exactly the most ethical bloke around.
