People do play along, it's what they're counting on. They're not trying to explain away the investigation, they're trying to muddy the waters enough so that when the real consequences come knocking, the large amount of Americans who either don't really pay attention to the news or dismiss it as a liberal conspiracy won't know what to believe. It's the only move they still have.
