Not launching yet and I won't believe it til it's out, but the idea is that if you ask Google Assistant to making a booking somewhere that doesn't have an online system, it will literally call them up in the background and talk to them on your behalf, then come back to you with the booking details. Watch the real-world demo below. Read more about it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5VN56jQMWM IRL text copying. They also made a big deal about how everyone gets the same news in the Headlines tab, you can't filter it to only show things you find 'interesting' https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/165/51c99d26-be64-4bba-9703-2698fbcdc466/Combined.max-1000x1000.png Waymo self-driving car service will be launching to the public in Phoenix, Arizona later this year. You'll be able to summon a car through the app and have it pick you up. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/waymo-self-driving-car-service-launch-this-year-phoenix/ Also other stuff, they are doing Assistant-with-a-screen products like the Amazon Echo Show, and new more natural-sounding voices for the Assistant are coming. Here's everything they announced.

The AI assistant calling seems very antisocial and borderline rude, that you couldnt give enough of a crap to call yourself
I did not expect Waymo to release this year already. Tech is moving fast...
It creeped me out because I immediately thought of nefarious uses of the tech i.e. scam robocalls that can actually respond to you and hold real conversations. Although regardless of this one Google product, that is going to happen eventually
I'm really sceptical though, Google Assistant is pretty good but considering the number of times I've asked it basic shit and it's told me to fuck off, I'm gonna be stunned if it's genuinely able to hold a reliable conversation with someone who doesn't even know they're talking to a computer.
Think about it, what if the appointment isnt available, the operator asks to rebook, does the assistant stay on the line and ping the owner for a decision of y/n to their phone, making the operator wait for them to check their phone? If so, that is extremely rude and a waste of time.
I like that IRL Text Copying feature, aren't there some already existing apps that do that? I'm not certain how I feel about the phone usage statistics, on one hand they can be good to recognize and curb behaviour, but on another that feels like just another datapoint that Google could harvest for revenue.
I hate talking on the phone, so even though it probably is considered antisocial, I think I would probably use that feature. Things that can read text have existed before, but I think what Google brings to the table here is usability, reliability and scalability.
I think there's an interesting accessibility aspect to it though. If you have a hearing or speech impairment or a physical disability that makes it difficult to make phone calls, it could be quite helpful to have an automated system do it for you.
will i be able to tell google to order a pizza for me
Well there's Just Eat.
This is where it actually makes sense. Good point.
Presumably, and you could set it to an easy shortcut like "ayyy pepperon"
You can already do this with Google Assistant (it has Google Lens built in), they're just bringing it to camera apps
AR google maps is cool as fuck. I can see myself using it a lot, especially because around where I live street names aren't even written on every corner or are too small to read.
my guess is it'll only work within the guidelines specified "book me between 1 and 3", more wiggle room "book me for 2:15", if 2:15 isn't available, "oh, okay"
If only Stephen Hawking was still alive, he could be using this tech :c
Google lens copying text from IRL is literally something I dreamed of as a kid.
"Ok Google, Find me A Job. 50k a year, remote working, do barely anything, 0 years experience".
"Pfffft, hahaha- Oh, i mean, googling. No Results Found."

Yeah, why can't we have this in the actual google assistant. "Hey Google, set climate to 74 degrees" "Okay. setting a timer!"
Didnt the update come after the presentation though?
