I'm fucking fed up with them because it's impossible to tell if it's legit or not at this point I'm just dead silent until the person answers, for strange numbers.
I'll get woken up in the morning by my phone thinking it's my work trying to call me in on my day off, but nope, it's just someone trying to spoof my area code. sigh
How the fuck does phone number spoofing work Why are scammers allowed to pretend to be calling from a phone number they're not calling from? Can someone explain this to me?
It's not just a US thing either, I get them every other week. It's usually a robowoman saying "Hello I'm calling about the recent car accident you had". Aside from being really annoying, I can't help but think about how fucked up it must be to get those calls if you really had been in a car accident recently, especially if it was a violent one resulting in injuries or even deaths, or if you weren't in one but had recently lost someone in a car accident.
I've been getting a ton of these and since I often get calls from unknown numbers for work I don't really have the luxury of just ignoring them all. I've found at least for me if I wait 4 seconds into the call they'll disconnect. Either at 4 seconds exactly or talking after that 4 second mark won't trigger the bot.
I just use an app that blocks most of them on my phone, haven't been bothered by it for a while.
I have a ton that keep calling my phone which happens to be a work phone. One was saying im certified for retiree health insurance at the ripe age of 25. It asked how old i was, so i had put on an old man voice and said a million years old. The fucking bot hung up on me. Another one called our hispanic sub crew, so he was fucking with it till he got an indian dude who asked for credit card info for fake dental insurance. So he kept saying "que?" repeatedly with the indian dude trying so hard to get those digits. So he passed the phone to me and i put on a thick southern accent and said like "Pablo here is by husband and i sure as shit dont need you harassin" "we brush our teeth fine around these parts thank ya", and the dude just said sorry repeatedly and hung up.
I blocked fucking 6 robo calls for the past 5 days. This is getting ridiculous. It's like a bad prank call; you know it's going to be bullshit, and yet you still waste the time and effort to get them out of your sight.
Most of the shit telemarketers and scammers do is already illegal, its just that its not enforced, or cant be. "Do Not Call" list was an effective thing for a while but now telemarketers are ignoring it because its not being enforced for whatever reason. Last I heard the FCC is investigating the rise in these calls but I doubt that will go anywhere.
FYI It was recently applied to the Malaysia Elections https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/malaysia-general-election-candidates-slam-spam-robocalls-10216432
I've been getting these calls with my old area code so I know it's usually nothing important, still very annoying.
i answered one once because it used my area code, figured it was someone i knew and i swear it's like they add you to a list after you answer one because right afterwards i got like 3 calls a day.
I never answer to a number I don't recognize. I used to get several robo calls a day on my home phone until I had enough and changed my area code.
there was a post about this in another thread(may have been on 4chan) about how to end these completely Just repeat FBI trigger phrases into the phone call because they're likely coming from overseas and being monitored by government agencies
I've been getting so many of these recently. It's really annoying.
it's hard to not answer random numbers when you're applying to jobs/internships
I'm pretty certain that's exactly what they do: they'll have a "recon" bot dial out a bunch of numbers, and then record each one that actually responds as being an "active and valid candidate." At which point, bring on the onslaught. What's really annoying is there is one in particular I get, infrequently, that is my exact phone number, except with the last two numbers flipped. If my phone number is (123) 456-7890, then this number is (123) 456-7809. I always forget it's a fucking bot until after I answer it, thinking maybe it's someone calling to inform me someone misdialed them when they meant to call me. What's worse is this number is part of a larger botnet that always advertises one of the two bot calls I always get: "We're calling about your recent stay at our XYZ hotel." Fuck you, I've never even heard of your XYZ hotel. The other one I get all the fucking time is "This is a call about your credit card. There's nothing wrong, but--" I don't know what the "but" is, because I never let them get that far. Especially since I know my credit union's number, and I know the people who staff the phone there. And these fuckheads calling me are neither.
all the spam calls I've been getting lately have the exact same first 6 digits of my phone number, not just the area code but literally the exact first six digits. I've just completely stopped answering them because 1) my phone tells me when it's spam anyway, and 2) If i see any part of my own phone number i just know it's spam
i dont answer anything anymore unless it comes up on caller ID as something i recognize. fucking sick and tired of getting 500 calls a day
As stated the killer is work phones. If I don't recognize the number on my personal cell fuck off leave a message if it's legit. But I HAVE to answer my work number because who could be calling is always unknown. No joke I get at least 5-10 a day of these a day. Half of them are actual people telling me I'm a veteran... I may not be but I've practically earned a purple heart at this point taking flak from these assholes.
I love how these basically exist to just drain people like you that need to do an already stressful job of your life force and just leech off the economy indirectly Must feel good knowing that there are robots out there specifically designed to just bother you
I keep getting calls about my vehicle warranty expiring. I should fucking hope it's expired by now, it's an '86. Though they give you the option to talk to an operator, which is good. You want to waste my time? I'll waste yours right back. Last one I got to talk to I put on a Dr. Girlfriend voice and when they asked for my year/make/model I told them "1986 Ford Bastard Wagon". "Sir, did you just say '1986 Ford Bastard Wagon?" "Yes." "Sir, our warranty doesn't cover that." "It doesn't?" "No, have a good day." Now I think they keep calling me out of spite, as the "Press 7 to be added to the do-not-call list" option doesn't do anything (like it ever did, the Bastard Wagon incident occurred after having requested to be removed SEVERAL times), and when I try to get an operator now it just says "Goodbye!" and hangs up on me.
Hi! This is Elizabeth and I'm with the Resort Rewards Center.  fuck off elizabeth you cunt
I made the grave mistake of picking up a call about a year ago and saying "hello?" The second the other line instantly disconnected I knew I was fucking toast.
Time to move to some desolate patch of land no one lives in Australia
Nah we get them here too. most are from other countries though so you can tell it's a robo call because there will be sometime a 30 second delay before anything starts talking. A lot of these clearly target older people still on landlines over here which is pretty disgusting.
I've gotten so many of these about how my credit card is eligible for an upgrade or is apparently in danger ....but I don't have a credit card
I bought something from from china on ebay a few weeks back and almost immediately afterwards gotten spam calls in mandarin. And they keep leaving voice mail.
I once had several different texas numbers call me in one day. Every single one of the fuckers was silent and it really pisses me off because I can't waste time with this shit.
