I didn't know people dying senselessly or kids getting their eyes poked out in paintball crossfire were the only two options. I appreciate the effort but firing guns, even paintball guns or airsoft guns, in an uncontrolled space, especially fucking family neighborhoods, should never be acceptable. The image of the guy shooting at an ice cream truck that has a dozen kids behind it and the scene of the guy helping the little kid shoot at a house didn't exactly warm my heart either.

Yeah, you're just not getting the point Shootouts are happening, or were, with real guns. There was no real way to put an end to that. Currently, this is an alternative being tried, with some success potentially. You can decry both things but one is noticably, in every imaginable way, less bad and is an improvement over the alternative.

Someone tried doing that a few years back to turn it into a "zombie survival simulator" using the abandoned parts of the city. Nothing ever came of it though for obvious reasons .

Still wouldn't move there. Replacement windows are not cheap. Even if the gang problem can be solved, Detroit's ugly rep can't easily be washed away after all these years and less likely to move in to.

These kinds of comparisons seem like a real stretch. I'm not quite optimistic that the people who would be having real firearm wars with each other in the street would be satisfied paintballing those people instead. If you're at the point where you hate someone enough to be willing to kill them, would you really settle for paintballing them instead? If we see real crime reductions I'll eat my words but idk, this seems more likely to be extra property damage and injuries IN ADDITION to existing serious violence. There's no reason to go shooting out people's windows with paintballs or shooting them at ice cream trucks or fucking shooting them at children.

As someone who lives here, there's been a number of stories where paintball wars have become deadly after someone fires back with a real gun, and the cops want an end to it. There's also been a lot of stories about innocents or their homes/cars being hit by paintballs, but I guess that's better than being hit by real bullets.
