https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/05/the-trump-administration-just-forced-smartphone-maker-zte-to-shut-down/ Last year, ZTE admitted to an elaborate multi-year scheme to sell US-made technology to Iran and North Korea in violation of US sanctions laws. ZTE paid $890 million in penalties and said it was in the process of disciplining dozens of senior company officials who had orchestrated a scheme to violate US sanctions laws. But last month the Trump administration accused ZTE of continuing to lie to the US government even after last year's guilty plea. The company told the US government that the guilty executives had received letters of reprimand and had had their 2016 bonuses reduced. But the US now says that was a lie—many of the employees received full bonuses, and they didn't receive letters of reprimand until early 2018—after the US government challenged ZTE on the issue.
Good. Now when online sales start kicking in they have to choose some of the other phone brands instead of shitty ZTE
Honestly, this was the right call. They violated sanctions. They knew exactly what they were doing and they did it anyway. Now they can face the music.
Well I have a new reason to buy a new phone now lol.
Well there goes the warranty on the phone I bought back in february.
Wait, isn't ZTE also responsible for the Red Magic Phone? That thing is still going on via indigogo, so I'm curious about that.
And I just bought this phone from them, which im currently posting from https://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/img/q8uVsOzXeS5ldf2XaWtMpWo_yuM=/670x503/2017/10/04/fba7d17c-60b9-44f1-9c41-638919fe63c2/zte-axon-m-9684-016.jpg And I really love it. Shame the company may now die because of this, though they do deserve it to be frank.
Wait wtf is that
A foldable phone with 2 screens. And it still finds space for a headphone jack and microsd expansion. Take that other manufacturers.
This is the phone I have too. It is such a dumb phone but I love it so much.
Its a shame too, right before the US Axon 7 was going to get Oreo. Hopefully the beta leaks and the community can build off it.
Dude, I've been waiting for ages for this beta to get officially released or leaked so that we can use the drivers in LOS/RR.
Wtf lol https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/995680316458262533?s=19
AMERICA FIRST Y'ALL!
While I understand the reasons, it is kind of a shame. They actually started making some great phones before this. I've got an Axon 7 running LineageOS right now, and it's honestly pretty damn good. Great stereo speakers, excellent DAC for the headphone jack, extendable storage or dual sim, great screen, good specs at the time, etc. And all for around $400 new off contract back in the day. It was one of the "flagship killers" of 2016, what with Google killing off the Nexus line. ZTE apparently had the Axon 7's successor in the works, but now that'll never see the light of day, and I guess I'll have to go with OnePlus or something for my next phone. The Axon 7 was a hard deal to beat though, and while its stock ROM is kinda ass, once you got LineageOS on there, you were basically using a Nexus device with a better DAC.
Just when I was going to post that I was amazed the Trump administration made a good decision for once. Never. Fucking. Fails.
Im really not sure what to say. I mean, ZTE was clearly in the wrong and need to be punished. But considering they are one of the largest phone manufacturers in the world, their collapse would be catastrophe. So now this delicate balancing game is the hands of trump. Oh boy
It seems a little odd considering he wants to be tough on Iran but they sold phones to Iran illegally lol
While I do enjoy seeing a company get severely punished for once, I have a feeling it's only because 1) it was a Chinese company who 2) broke US sanctions on Iran.
And the NRA, which is more of a Republican lobbying group than it is a gun rights lobbying group, just made the guy who illegally sold weapons to Iran their President. This is gettin weird.
I really just never expected Trump to tweet about this relatively obscure issue, it's not the sort of thing I expect him to even be aware of
I disagree. No company should "too big to fail". If anything, large companies should be treated more harshly because they have more than enough resources to ensure they are complying with all laws, thus any violation is entirely avoidable and should be attributed to malice. This company being forced to shutdown sends a powerful message: Violating sanctions is not worth it. Saving this company sends an equally powerful message: Sanctions can be ignored as long as you're a large enough company.
I mean, he probably isnt. Someone who is talked to him, and then managed to keep other people out of the room long enough for him to tweet about it.
