That was seriously awesome, what a good answer.
I can only imagine how an evangelical preacher in America would have answered that.
He likely just gave this kid the comfort he needs so he can grieve and learn to live with his fathers death. I hope the kid found peace because of this.
I'm like 70% sure the current pope is atheist.
Or WBC
They would say that the only way to be saved is by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. You can be a complete asshole in life and still make it. They don't think doing good stuff matters and wonder why Catholics put so many rules on it. Also the whole having a Pope thing they can't understand. At least that's what I've gotten from talking with heavily evangelical Christians in Western PA.
I mean salvation through faith over works is the core of Protestantism.
"You're dad is burning in hell, and you will too for coming out of his evil balls."
"No, he's too progressive to be catholic" - says the people who aren't familiar with how the majority of catholics are, and assume they're just as backwards as American evangelicals.
I'm 45% sure the current Pope is actually the Pope. THE FUCKER IS BURNING IN HELL, HELL I SAY, HEEEEELLLLLLLLL *Kid starts crying even more* AND YOU'LL JOIN HIM UNLESS YOU FOLLOW GOD.
I'm π²% the pope is Catholic.
I'm pretty sure this is literally what the WBC said to some families
why there are multiple Christian sects that teach things like hell not existing or that all good people go to heaven
It's funny, because American Protestantism is pure P2W mentality. It's literally where EA gets their inspiration.
It's hard for me to even understand a statement like this unless you're equating the crazy televangelists with "American Protestantism."
Yes, but the Pope is, for all intents and purposes, the word of God when it comes to liturgical matters.
Only when he claims to be speaking in that way.
He is a good man and someone I believe all Christians (or well, at least Catholics at least) should strive to be like.
Modern Evangelicalism is one of the most popular forms of Christianity in the US IIRC, and is largely sold on the premise by many preachers like Joel Osteen(and many, many, many more) of the "Prosperity" Ideology. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosperity_theology This isn't at all a small, or negligible part of Christianity in the United States. These are some of the most active political demographics in America, and it is largely driven by faith.
Trust me, I know what prosperity theology is, and I know that a HUGE portion (basically all of it) of American protestantism actively fights against it. You're mistaking the big TV preachers as being good representatives of Evangelicalism generally. The vast majority of American Protestants go to small to medium churches.
It's ironic that the Catholic Church tends to be more progressive than most protestant branches, how the tables have turned.
I won't/can't dispute that However, these people exist in large numbers, and they have smaller, and more medium sized churches spread around I'm sure, to go with their giant mega churches.
I'm very agnostic/turning Pagan, but... I still strongly love this Pope. He's so humble, comforting, and peaceful. He's a wonderful man and I hope the next few will walk in his footsteps.
While some will say that the usual response is "that's for god to decide". I feel the pope is being a bit dishonest with his statements here.
As far as official catholic doctrine goes, he's being incredibly dishonest.
Not really. Catholic doctrine, as least as I was raised, states that getting into heaven as a non-believer isn't impossible, but it does come down to good deeds in life.
Then official catholic doctrine needs to fucking change
He had to comfort a kid with a dead father not explain Catholic theology to him
That's kind of hard to do when it's in your own holy book that you've states is the infallible word of god.
