This is essentially a thinly veiled attempt to get more conservative judges on board the Supreme Court.
The most likely justice to retire would be Anthony Kennedy, who turns 82 in July and has served since 1988. One of the nine-member court’s five conservatives,
Kennedy sometimes sides with the four liberal justices on major issues like gay rights and abortion. He has said nothing about retirement plans.
If President Donald Trump appoints Kennedy’s successor, the court likely would move further to the right, with the liberals deprived of their occasional ally.
Afaik Kennedy is generally conservative except when it comes to personal rights, but I guess the gop political machine would turn on him as fast as McCain.
Kennedy's closing remark in the case that legalized gay marriage
No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.
As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage.
Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization's oldest
institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.
Kennedy has been considered a swing vote for a long time. It's no wonder they want him gone before the midterms.
And why would they want to load the SCOTUS with more conservative judges so quickly?
Oh, probably that whole little gerrymandering thing that's making its way slowly towards that very court.
Fucking transparently craven. The Republican Party as it exists now is the enemy of American democracy.
Imagine the anger if Gorsuch sides with liberals in that case like that immigration one.
"wtf I hate activist judges like Gorsuch now"
