So she assumed this was racially charged because she's black and they're white?
Why did they call the police though?
Probably scared shitless.
The point is that working/sleeping late in the common rooms to finish assignments is a common occurrence at the university, while calling the cops on students you don't recognize is not.
Regardless of whether it was racially motivated, calling the police ever something like this is moronic.
why would the sight of a student sleeping in a common room at a college dorm scare another student? they were obviously trying to stir shit up by calling the cops
Confirming her identity took longer than usual because Ms. Siyonbola’s preferred name, which was printed on her ID, was different from what was in the university record, a school official said. < article states that the person sleeping in the area was not really being helpful to clearing the situation either.
It was also 1:30 in the morning with lights off and obviously someone else in the room, if you're taking a nap in a public area, leave the lights on. That's just common sense.
Is it cool to have your panties in a twist 24/7 or something? Do people seriously have nothing better to do?
The lights are on in the videos, I don't think she was scared of a potential "crazy bum rapist" or she would have run away
When I was in college, I lived in a dorm with a large central common room. We were right off of a very busy public street. The entrance to our building had a desk guard to make sure anyone who wasn't a student couldn't come in.
Meanwhile, two blocks down, the dorm with just an automated door and a card reader would have campus security come by at least once a month to turn out a homeless person who had come in after someone else and was sleeping in their common room.
I don't know what arrangement Yale has, like, if they've got Campus Security of their own or not, but calling someone when you find a stranger sleeping in your public space isn't, in and of itself, a stupid thing to do as far as I can tell.
Honestly without video of their initial encounter this just seems like an overreactive woman getting police involved in what was probably an argument over "Yes I can, no you can't"
I dunno if it's like this at that campus but on my campus the lights for most rooms are connected to a motion detector so that they shut off if nobody's in the room. There actually were several occasions where I had to stay on campus very late at night, being the only person to occupy a computer lab, and I'd have to get up every five minutes or wave my arms around so that the lights would come back on.
I don't think there's any way to justify calling the cops on someone napping in a common area. it's fuckin' ridiculous. the most threatening person in that room was the bitch that called the cops on this girl. like shit even if she wasn't a student and wasn't supposed to be there, that's not a reasonable course of action whatsoever. You'd call campus security before anyone else...
While calling the campus PD seems like a huge overreation, having worked at my Uni's Admissions and having a bunch of friends in Resident Life who have all sorts of crazy stories, I think the distinction between Campus Police and actual local police is important here. Campus PD is there to help students however they can. Though for us calling the fuzz was usually a last resort or if someone was in danger. Most things can be solved student to student b/c no one wants to get the cops involved. We only had a few rooms in the dorm buildings that required keys from Res Life to access that they probably wouldn't want you spending forever in. Otherwise most the campus was usually open all night, until doors are locked and you can't get in. Had the Campus PD lock us in a building once while we were studying, just telling us "just shut the lights off when you go."
The woman says the same person called the cops on her black friend once before, so maybe there is racial bias here, but you can tell the cops don't wanna be there as much as she does.
Unless there is another reliable reason why this happened, I'm gonna go whatever reason we have left
Someone that you don't know sleeping in a common area by dorms at 1:30 in the morning is one possible reason, and quite a bit more normal than assuming racism.
The "sleeping" lady also seems super combative for no reason. Just show them your ID and you can leave. It's not a big deal.
Do you expect to know every single person that lives in your dorm room? are you fuckin' nuts?
She might've been flustered because someone else decided to give her a hard time for no reason.
I'm giving possible reasons. I didn't say they were all good reasons. My point is that going, "Yeah, racism is the only possible explanation left" is just silly. People do dumb things all the time. We also have no clue how their interaction actually went. That part isn't recorded.
Did you watch the video she recorded? She was constantly making snide remarks, not giving basic info the police were requesting, etc.
There's no reason for them to have acted like they did. While it's impossible to guarantee that this call was due to racism, it's very likely that it was.
I agree with that last point, yeah. I know I would've been pretty livid had it happened to me, and I might've acted in a way and said shit I would regret later. My comment was more to explain rather than justify her behavior.
Way to go to extremes bud
Oh come on. If you see someone asleep somewhere you don't expect, you might be startled at first, but calling the cops? come on man
Doesn't make a person a racist
Yeah, but did they check up on you for your safety, or because they were called?
Based on...?
see, to me there's a difference between the cops going around to make sure everyone is out, and someone finding someone, and while present, calling the cops on them
The beanbag chairs at our commons area were never cleaned and I would never sit on them after learning the variety of bodily fluids they're covered in.
master's in African studies? yeah that would put me to sleep as well, just don't call the po-lice on me thank you very much i cannot help it
I would love to see that list of "recent episodes."
I hope they're not just referring to those couple examples. That's basically nothing when you take into account the entire country.
