I think its interesting to know gun culture from the other side of the world
While I was working in Thailand, some local villager waving a fucking Remington at me scared the shit out of me
Too bad there's no lesson to be learned here
Homemade Firearms are a big thing in SE Asia. Philippines is the top dog in terms of home production, but Thailand is a very close second. Tools and material is not hard to come by, and as mentioned by the article: People usually get into it because they lack employment opportunities, or criminal record screws them over.
One of my personal favs out of Thailand:

I think the root problem is the amount of gang-related crime in Thailand; Thailand is a major exporter of heroin and importer of slaves. These criminals want to protect their financial interests from other gangs so they get guns.
It's a magnitude of things. Thailand is a centerpiece of the heroin trade, but it's also had several armed insurgencies. One of the most noteworthy being Khun Sa and his Mong Tai Army, which controlled large sects of Myanmar, but he also had some control in Thailand.
These types of things lead to a large flow of firearms from the superpowers in the Cold War, and you also had farmers who built their own weapons and protected their communities like the Green Army in Russia.
Stamping out the firearms of Thailand is near impossible at this point. Lots of dakkah, and lots of corruption.
