Jails are replacing visits with video calls—inmates and families..
Jails are already devastatingly shitty enough dude I had to get a call from someone in a correctional facility and it wouldn't let it go through, because payment didn't work. They already shake you down for payment to hear your family, which should be free.
Video calling is something inmates should have access to but it sure as fuck shouldn't be replacing visiting.
The fact that it replaces visiting is what makes this so much worse too imagine being imprisoned for a minor drug crime, or falsely accused of a serious crime. You can't call out. You can't even get a visit. Even when someone who wants to visit does you can't even see them in person. At that point why even live.
Because remember, treating prisoners with any semblance of humanity is WRONG!
Didn't you get the memo? We changed the branding to AmeriSlaves™ now.
"Brought to you by The United States of Facedesk."
Your not far off the mark there, in the south prisoners are used to manufacture all kinds of products as de facto slaves to the state and it doesn't make it sound any better that most are blacks. This isn't community service shit like building benches for the local parks though, its full blown for profit manual labor.
Can't make money off of a privatized prison system if you treat the prisoners humanely
Really sad that a potential new amendment to the 13th to end prison labor would be defeated by the states whose economies benefit from it and/or the private prison lobby, if that exists.
