• OWLs Philadelphia Fusions FU team shirt ruled inappropriate; must wear T shirts

One of the top teams in the Overwatch League had to suit up in something other than their preferred jersey, after league managers apparently ruled their their “FU” printed apparel strayed a little too close to the edge of good taste. Philadelphia Fusion made the grand finals of the Overwatch Contenders series earlier this weekend, but weren’t wearing their official garb which designates them as FU, for Fusion University, the unit’s sponsor. The team’s members confirmed to Dot Esports that their threads were officially verboten. So they wore black shirts yesterday against OpTic Academy yesterday and today against Toronto. Joe Marsh, the chief financial officer of the Fusion, drily noted that the Overwatch League otherwise has no problems with jersey numeral 69, or the “BAMF’ belt buckle that McCree wears in the game, for that matter. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/58149/e2dd8294-7de0-446f-9caf-d9c1b3a5216e/image.png https://twitter.com/MarsJoe14/status/995279582407397381
I don't understand how Overwatch is popular.
It's extremely accessible aside from that it costs money.
When seeing them all lined up with their shirts on, I just see fufufufu
waifus and porn
They put BAMF on McCree's belt, which is way more inappropriate than just FU. Wat
A big part is Blizzard's name. Blizzard remains one of the largest brand names in gaming, rivaled only by the console makers and the likes of EA and Activision (yes, I know Activision and Blizzard are one, but they exist as different brands) arguably. So just having Blizzard's name on a product is an immediate and massive boost to its presence. Second, massive media push. In the run up to its release and then possibly even more heavily after Blizzard poured money in to marketing it everywhere they could and making it basically the face of gaming for at least the first six months of its life. It was daily news about Overwatch from just about every source, and some of the biggest personalities were either playing it or at least talking about it all the time. Third, accessibility. Its a very bright, relatively low detail product with mostly clean visuals when its not in action and just a mess of particle and sprite effects. All the characters are given extremely "quirky" and exaggerated personalities designed for mass market appeal. No one is too wild or niche to avoid potentially offending or isolating 95% of people, they're basically horoscopes where they can appeal to almost anyone. And the actual mechanical aspect of it is simple. Not a lot of buttons to deal with, not a lot of number crunching to do or stats to track, its all kept simple and vague. There are other factors, but those are the biggest ones.
OWL is run by different people iirc
are you mocking me?!
OWL is no fun allowed, and you can't spell fun without FU.
what? who are you? or am I missing something here
pretty sure you are mocking me gonna report you to Kaplan because of that fufufu
What a bunch of fucking snowflakes
This article is pretty misleading. The main OWL team is named the Philadelphia Fusion, and is owned by Comcast. Now, the Fusion has a Contenders team (minor league) named Fusion University. So while they are owned by the Fusion, they aren't THE Philadelphia Fusion.

Glad OWL is here to ruin esports culture
that doesn't help that its such a visual clusterfuck and every corner you turn there are stun locks which are a big fat no in competitive shooter games.
Remember how TF2 comp banned the Natascha even though it only really fucked over Scouts and turned you into a big, reduced-damage-output bullet sponge?
I thought that at some point the Natascha was altered to always apply its slowing effect regardless of its distance, which made it really fucking annoying because you could be miles away from the heavy and even if he nipped you with a bullet you would be tractor beamed for a split second, which could really fuck you over.
The Natascha upon initial release was essentially the perfect "Scout Swatter", in that, say, on 2Fort, if a Scout was double-jumping into your battlements from atop the bridge, one Natascha bullet would basically stop him mid-jump and ruin his day forever (Scouts hated this so much I named my Vintage Natascha "Vintage Dispenser of Delicious Tears" ). However, they fixed that, and the Natascha, in my experience, became just a good all-rounder for Scouts, Pyros, Medics, basically any class that relied on a modicum of speed, but Hale help you if you ended up going up against other Heavies with any other gun, Soldiers, or Demomen who do lots of burst damage, have high-ish HP, and didn't rely on speed (though at the initial release IIRC it also effectively froze Soldiers and Demomen if they attempted to rocket/bomb-jump).
OWL seems, to me, more like the logical conclusion of esports culture rather than some destructive force. Esports has always been a sterilization and corporatization of competitive gaming. OWL is just the most concentrated and condensed form of that "culture".
I was just having this discussion with some people on Discord the other day. Basically everyone I play games with, and all the friends of all the people I play games with, bought Overwatch and played the dog shit out of it for a few weeks, a couple months at most then just kind of stopped. But I feel like it's still incredibly popular. I just somehow don't know anyone who still plays it Always tempted to pick it back up again but I feel like I'd get my team fucked over by being away for so long.
The same reason Alex jones is popular.
Well I guess you can say I meant competitive gaming then. Its always had a level of raunchiness to it that maade it more enjoyable. OWL definitely takes a lot of that fun away, at least valve games still have a lot of it
