Which films do you keep on going back to, every now and then, to watch again? And why? For myself, I watched Contact (1997) for the nth time again a few days ago. I love watching it as I feel that it is a rare example of sci fi done right, it has some intense and also some beautiful moments, has solid philosophical underpinnings and does good commentary on some topics. All of that in a film which is relatively easy viewing and believable acting. I feel that every time I watch it, I pick up something which I had missed before. What about you? I may as well mention my other classics such as the original Blade Runner but the cut without the Harrison Ford narration (the cut with the narration ruins the film), and Dr Strangelove.
Se7en comes to mind. Always eery, always intense. The last scene always gets me. "Ernest Hemingway once wrote, 'The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part."
Yearly watch list: Leone Trilogy Alien Aliens Alien3 Predator Predator 2 LoTR trilogy Akira Ghost in the Shell Seven Samurai Ran The Raven
The Big Lebowski
Zodiac. It's my favorite crime film ever. I stayed in touch with my film teacher from high school after I graduated, and before I moved away a few years later, he came over and showed Zodiac to me and my girlfriend and I haven't been the same since. It has me hanging off each word of the script for the whole 3 hour runtime. Tense from start to finish, but never completely abandons its dark sense of humor. It's a crime that could have only happened at that point in time and the film doesn't just ode to the legend of the Zodiac, but it feels more like a tribute to the peopke who became obsessed with the case after it was dismissed. All the performances are 10/10. David Fincher hasn't directed a film better than this. Seriously, if you're reading this and haven't seen Zodiac, I can't recommend it enough. Watch the director's cut.
Some Like It Hot
Spirited Away. It keeps me grounded.
Alien, Aliens, Jurassic Park, The Big Lebowski, and the original Star Wars trilogy are all basically seared into my mind with how many times I've seen them. Can literally put them on any time, anywhere, and enjoy myself.
Trilogies. The Alien trilogy, the Indiana Jones trilogy, the Dark Knight trilogy... 2 hours just doesn't cut it you know, a really great film needs to be a series to stay with me forever.
Prince of Egypt happens to be my favorite animated movie, so I watch that every few years.
Back to the Future is a flawless film
I don't have any fictional films on my list yet, but I've seen On Any Sunday so many times I could practically recite it from memory. It's got a charming informal narration feel that makes it more engaging to watch than most modern documentaries, I feel.
