Canadian doctor shot by Israeli sniper near Gaza border
A Canadian-Palestinian doctor was shot in the legs by an Israeli sniper and one of his paramedics was killed on the Gaza border Monday as clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli Defence Forces left dozens dead and more than 1,000 wounded.
Dr. Tarek Loubani, an emergency physician from London, Ont., who is also an associate professor at the University of Western Ontario’s medical school, joined medical teams on the Gaza border Monday to care for Palestinians who might be injured in demonstrations against the inauguration of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.
Dr. Loubani, who has served as an emergency field doctor in Tanzania and conflict zones such as Iraq and southern Lebanon, said he was wearing a green surgeon’s outfit and standing with several orange-vested paramedics about 25 metres from the protests at the border when he was hit.

“I am very seasoned about not being shot at. I know where to stand. I know where to be. I know how not to get shot,” he told The Globe and Mail in a telephone interview from Gaza where he recuperating. “Snipers don’t reach me because of mistakes. I did everything right. We were all huddled. We were high visibility. It was quiet at the exact moment I got shot. The bullet went through my left leg, through my right leg out and hit the ground.

“I remember looking at my shoes and I remember thinking, ‘My god, how did so much blood get there so fast’,” he said. “One of them grabbed one of the last tourniquets. We were down to our last 10 tourniquets. I said ‘No, no leave it for someone else. Try to pressure bandage me.’ ’’

Dr. Loubani stressed he did not want the story to be about him but about the lack of medical services in poverty-ridden Gaza.
“This is not a political issue. This is about Palestinians as people and their right to health care. No matter where they are, even at protests,” he said. “It is about us as Canadians being in places where people need medical care and providing it to them and not having to be worried about being shot or hurt or killed because we are doing what we all agree everyone deserves.”
Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland’s office strongly condemned the Israeli action.
“We are very concerned that Canadian doctor and humanitarian worker Tarek Loubani was shot yesterday in Gaza,” press secretary Adam Austen said in a statement.
“It is appalling and inexcusable that civilians, members of the media, first responders, and children have been among the victims.”
“This is another horrific example of the Israeli military using excessive force and live ammunition in a totally deplorable way,” said Philip Luther, research and advocacy director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International . “This is a violation of international standards, in some instances committing what appear to be willful killings constituting war crimes.”
Human Rights Watch said the high number of deaths and injuries was the foreseeable consequence of granting Israeli soldiers leeway to use lethal force outside of life-threatening situations in violation of international norms.
Wasn't sure if this should be in politics due to the subject matter but how the hell do you justify shooting a clearly identified medic?
Also pretty amazing how he's still more concerned about helping other people despite being shot, he also got detained in Cairo due to helping people in protests there too.
That's a court martialin'
Not gonna happen.
Then obviously what is needed are canadian countersniper teams to protect said doctors, and you really do not want to fuck with canadian snipers.
Which won't ever happen.
I really abhor Israel these days. And of course there'll be people defending them for this, too.
At least let me dream.

Wowowow stop being anti-semitic mate.
Also from a tactical standpoint this isn't actually that surprising. The basis of modern warfare lies in exhausting your enemy to the point were they can no longer care for their wounded and are forced to retreat.
As a medic myself I know damn well that my red cross won't shield me from bullets, it doesn't matter if the medical resource in question is military or non-military.
It's a shitty situation that breaks international law but the point is that the IDF treats these clashes as part of a war and anyone in Palestine as enemy combatants which will result in them acting as if this was a full-on military conflict. (FYI I'm not defending them, just pointing out the obvious...)
"I don't know why these Palestinians keep trying to fight us" ponders Israeli sniper shortly after shooting doctor.
wouldn't want a canadian sniper to accidentally fire an apologetic bullet at an israeli

How do I upvote more than once???
that was actually intended to be a reply to the comment below it oops
This is a war crime
and stuff
And as usual, Israel will face no reprecussions. Disgusting.
Israel is probably the only country in the world who tell people exactly where they're going to drop bombs before they do so.
I'm honestly hoping whatever moron was responsible for this one will get court-martialed, but for all we know this might have been done under orders by an officer in the field. Either way I'm pretty pessimistic about the prospect of anything being done about this. Either way I'm pretty certain no details about further dealing with this incident are gonna get public, so I guess we will never know.

Interesting to see over the past few months, the turnaround in public opinion of Israel. Before, you couldn't say anything about Israel for fear of being seen as anti-semitic. Now nearly anyone I talk current news with agrees that Israel is one of the shittiest countries on earth. I wonder what sparked that? Are people just fed up with all of Israel's bs?

The fucking balls on that guy
I told you Israel was a mistake.
I never liked Israel. Bunch of pampered twits who act like self-superior assholes to their neighbors and make a ruckus in international relations because they think that being the "holy land" entitles them to special treatment. If it weren't for the support from American Republicans, they would've been knocked off their high horse and into the dirt long ago. They're the kid in class who acts like an asshole to everyone - even the teacher - with impunity because his dad's the principal.
Always had a hard time understanding the relationship many people have with Israel. I can't even see much of a justification for it existing apart from the fact that it's there now, so tough shit. As i've gotten older, i've started to dislike the favor the world gives to a state that so blatantly acts against basic ethical tennets and shits on the international community. IMO Israel was a mistake and it's only because of their state religion that They're not in the Palestinians shoes. They should be counting themselves lucky, but the sheer entitlement guiding so many malicious acts just leaves me further disgusted with the world.
Sometimes I have to question why Israel is a close ally when they do just as much shady shit is Iran/Iraq/Syria etc
Support for Israel, at least in America, has been a bi-partisan platform plank for many years for a host of reasons. They're a strategic gateway to the middle east, they have incredibly wealthy lobbyists in America, there are religiously motivated reasons as well. Israel is also often a testing group for futuristic weapons systems that 'somehow' get sold back to the DoD, when other nations are literally piling over each other begging for access to things like Iron Dome or rapid combat-trauma kits.
However, America has generally taken a pretty determined, somewhat careful hand in just how much they empower and embolden their Jewish Puppet State.
Then Trump happened.
Trump, for whatever reasons, has pretty much indulged Israel the same way a grandparent spoils a grandchild they don't see often. Except, y'know, instead of too many candies, Grandad just gave Lil' Shlomie the holy city of Jerusalem.
So by association, people are finally finding the courage to speak up against Israel because of the voluntary association with the Orange-In-Chief.
There's more, of course. Israel is currently undergoing some ridiculous internal political stuff with their shamelessly corrupt Prime Minister, and Israeli settlers in Palestinian territory have been emboldened by the past decade of international "so-what" about their lebensraum, so they've been getting particularly egregious in their encroachment on ethnic minorities.
On the flip side, somehow, Gaza is only getting worse. In America there was a national outcry over Flint, Michigan, a small town where lead had leeched in to the drinking water and was poisoning people. Meanwhile, in Gaza, it's estimated that some 97% of all available drinking water has contaminant levels that match or exceed the "inhumane and unbelievable" contamination found in Flint. If such a state continues, there will not be a "next generation" in Gaza. This is not, of course, a coincidence. Time and again, Israeli strategic campaigns level civil infrastructure and leave toxic chemical residue (from weapons who's use constitute actual warcrimes). There can be no question that an actual genocide is taking place. It's just that rather than being done quickly in a tightly organized fashion, instead over the course of decades Israel has created a land that can sustain no life, and acts surprised when the people dying on that land want to move back to where their grandparents lived.
How is this not a coincidence? The reason this happens is because of uncontrolled sewage and use of fertilizers, the fact this isn't dealt with is because the one proper solution, use of methods of desalination and different water sources are inaccessible to the global population due to blockades and limited use of electricity (which are done in an effort to weaken Hamas and other local organizations). By the way, where are you getting this toxic chemical residue due to use of war criminal weaponry? I happen to know pretty well what kind of ordnance is being used in Israeli bombings in the southern front due to having actually worked on the planes which do said bombings, and I've never noticed us loading chem warfare ordnance on planes.
The blockade is a travesty and a tragedy, but what solution do you propose? Do you really think it is done in an effort to delete the Gazan population as opposed to short-sighted, cold and calculated strategic reasoning?
Like, hell, I don't really disagree with the rest of your posts but it's quite a leap to say the aim of the military and governmental leadership is to eradicate the population, when other explanations suffice.
Maybe Hamas should use the cement that they were given for rebuilding to actually rebuild instead of putting it underground into tunnels that are used to try to infiltrate into israel. Your suggestion of a genocide is straight up brainlet material, 2 seconds of thinking would make you realize that there's no genocide, otherwise the Palestinians in the West Bank would also be getting killed by the israelis. The Palestinians can break the siege by removing Hamas from government or the Egyptians can open the rafah crossing and allow supplies to be brought in that way. Expecting israel to compromise it's security because Hamas is messing up is stupid.
