Mueller told Trump team he would not indict Trump: Giuliani told CNN
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Special Counsel Robert Mueller has told President Donald Trump’s legal team he would follow Justice Department guidance that a president cannot be indicted, CNN reported, citing an interview with Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani. “All they get to do is write a report,” Giuliani said, according to the network. “They can’t indict. At least they acknowledged that to us after some battling, they acknowledged that to us.” A spokesman for Mueller, Peter Carr, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment
Onto the actual topic, you know that doesn't actually save Trump from much of anything except a constitutional fight over his assumed executive perk of being immune to indictment, right, Giuley? The moment he's impeached, or leaves office at the end of his term, he's vulnerable to everything.
Thanks man. And yeah it's just postponing the inevitable. But I'm sure some people will be disappointed with this news.
It's not very newsworthy, really. It's simply a case of Mueller, a law enforcement official, following the law. The thing is, if a proper case is built against Trump, you can be sure someone's going to leak it. And when they do, Congress is going to have to impeach the guy if they don't want an angry mob of millions beating down their door.
There's going to be an angry mob either way at this point.
Do we actually have a statement from Mueller himself? Because Giuliani does not exactly have the best record for his televised statements.
If this is the case, they'll just follow the normal impeachment procedure once the investigation is closed.
This is just assuming this is even true and not just more of Trump's "I'm totally not under investigation. This investigation in to me is a complete witch hunt and also I'm not under investigation."
And that Mueller's team isn't just bullshitting them.
This is according to Giuliani, of course, so who the hell knows if Mueller's office made any such statement. Either way, that's not terribly surprising. Generally understanding has always been that a sitting president cannot be indicted. He can, however, be impeached, at which point he has no such privilege to avoid indictment. Mueller's greatest challenge here is a political one: when he's ready to recommend charges, his case must be so fucking rock solid that even a GOP-controlled congress agrees that there is no other choice but to impeach. That's also why the GOP has made such extensive efforts to discredit the investigation -- they will resist every possible effort to impeach Trump because they know that doing so would irreparably shatter their political credibility. But if the investigation is just a big ole' WITCH HUNT, they're hoping they can get away with ignoring the DOJ's recommendations.
