Smells like Bowie.
Reznor and Bowie were good friends, and both took huge inspiration from one another. Bowie in particular took a ton of inspiration from NiN between 1995-1997 or so, including in his music videos. Reznor was apparently very hard hit by Bowie's sudden death, and secretly released his own absolutely beautiful cover/mix of "I Can't Give Everything Away" shortly after Bowie's death.

I Can't Give Everything Away is becoming a staple of their live shows too, usually with Trent saying beforehand how much he misses David. the crowd goes nuts/burst into tears every time, it's honestly pretty heartbreaking
I knew they performed it live at least once, which was when it became apparent that the mysterious mix was made by Reznor himself, but I had no idea that it's become a staple!
Bowie's death hit me ridiculously hard and I never even so much as saw him in person, so I can't begin to imagine how Trent Reznor, someone who not only idolized him, but also worked/performed alongside him must have felt...
Not to mention Bowie pushed for Trent to kick his drug habit
Yep, and having someone else who went through pretty much the exact same struggles must have been absolutely invaluable in regards to that, especially since Reznor looked up to him.

On another note, this song is giving me some serious 1.Outside vibes, not just Bowie in general. Considering how absolutely terrific 1.Outside is, I am more than a little excited for this EP.
This song in particular off of 1.Outside is very similar to this, with Sue(Or In A Season Of Crime) off of Blackstar seeming to be an influence as well.
