Sometimes I really do wonder if they do it purposefully. Their is a certain amount of disbelief I have, but the amount they push school shooters as some anti-hero is nauseating.
As much as it treads on the ground of conspiracy theories, I wouldn't be that surprised. If X gets you lot of views, wouldn't you want X to happen more?
Guy in the video says it well: it's business. With the amount of focus the American media in general gives to the shooters, and how little they give to the victims, I think it's pretty obvious they don't give a shit about those who've died or lost someone; they care about getting attention and revenue.
A psychologist went on the air and stated that news media is helping inspire copycats and basically laid out guidelines as to how to report shootings like this. Clearly they didn't listen nor do they care. Its all about the sweet, sweet, dosh.
At some point there ought to be a ban on reporters at any mass shooting. When you cut off the copy cats inspirational fuel and leave it solely local, the cycle begins to fall apart. Its not like the American public isn't aware of this pandemic, but everytime we hear about it, the public becomes more and more apathetic. Reference that cross-post how this isn't a gun problem but a cultural problem.
I always knew tragedy sells, but I didn't expect them to encourage it.
I would say it's not the public that are apathic to these, as it is the public suffering these attacks. It's the politicians, as one side proposes solutions that are completely unfeasible, and the other plain refusing to do anything about it, blaming these attacks on stuff like video games, gay stuff etc.
Watch Nightcrawler for a (rather embellished) version of how these channels operate.
If it's the interview i'm thinking of, they didn't just ignore him, they cut off the interview early to get him off the air before he damaged their ratings.
But but but youtube told me advertisers don't want to advertise around negative content!
Charlie brooker talked about this same thing years ago yet its still relevant https://youtu.be/Stc42j4Nz2w He said this about 9 years ago and its still going on.
There's nothing more American than profiting from pain
I dunno, I think China has us beat there.
I think every nation that has ever existed since the dawn of civilization has beat us there... Every nation has caused suffering and pain to others/their own. Directly, or indirectly.
it's not a question of if, it's a question of how much.
It’s pretty much what Jon Stewart said, the 24/7 News Cycle is built for tragedies like 9/11. They thrive on tragedies
Well, that depends on your definition of "profit". I'm sure if you asked 'em, those soviet soldiers who tried to vacation in Finland were in a lot of pain
Eh i probably should've said large nations/empires...
Pretty much one of the reasons I refuse to raise my future children in America, shits on fire yo.
This is honestly what upsets me the most about the media being the media. To no huge fault of you own, all the sensationalist and 24/7 reporting of news outlets about the latest tragedy or outrage makes america seem this entirley crazy place where there is no peace, everyone's shooting each other, yelling at each other, and you most likely won't survive your next commute, and it's not. It's really not. America is a great place, even still. Even if you completely disagree with the political direction the country has been going, my fellow Americans, are, by a large, kind, nice, and respectful people. A huge vast majority of the 320 million american wake up every day, go to work, act with some form of courtesy to others, get done what they need to, and go home. Some are curt, some can be rude, but you don't go outside expecting to get shot the next time someone walks up to you. I work in a home improvement store in a pretty bad part of the city- we have multiple thefts every day and the cops are here at least every other day. Even in this environment, a vast majority of the customers I get act well above basic human decency- but if you were to believe the media reporting about the next outrage you'd expect the cops to burst in and beat up the minority associates I work with every time they stop in. I'm not saying there aren't problems, there are, which many can be solved through political process. But I am fucking tired of seeing posts like this, again to no fault of your own, that are outright scared of american/americans because the media constantly overbroadcasting to the world every terrible thing that's happened and making a circus out of it. I know my other constituents are better than that, even if there are some very terrible people out there.
I also would rather live somewhere with a real health care system. As i said, that was just one of the reasons.
