• Make ratings not show for half an hour after a post is made / 10 ratings

People seem to be snowballing ratings right now- the first rating your post gets really matters unless it's quickly overwhelmed with others. Caring about ratings is kinda dumb but it also feels really stupid to see people rating without reading, especially when it seems to influence discussion so much.
This might at least work good for SH/PD where it matters most one thing that's annoying is not being able to disable ratings outside of custom CSS, the alerts are annoying beyond fuck and I just ended up uBlocking them tbh
They bring up a really good point. Hive mind-ism has always been a problem on FP and this actually seems like a sensible way to combat that.
Admittedly this is a more extreme distilled example but it definitely seems like ratings directly contribute to some posts (not that it wouldn't be pretty obvious that ratings _do_ impact rhetoric): https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/107231/3d682d22-8841-4fab-a862-f636606a430d/image.png Politics of that thread aside, this post is in total agreement with the original statement, but also slings shade (original post was rated dumb/baby)
One of the reasons why I wanted to see how FP would work without/using coins for negative ratings. Once things get heated everyone starts flinging the bottles and boxes around. I've seen plenty of posts that weren't wrong flooded with dumbs cause I guess people didn't like their opinion? It happens a lot on Reddit with downvotes as well. FP at least doesn't hide posts, but it makes me wonder how much a post with 50 dumb ratings would influence replies
Ratings subtly affect how you read a thread, even if there is no popularity ordering like on Reddit. I sometimes catch myself browsing long-winding threads looking only at posts that got a lot of positive ratings, while also filtering out those that get mostly bad ratings, or no ratings at all. Looking at the ratings first makes me look at the post itself in a different light as well. It's kind of like looking at the review scores before watching a movie or playing a game, you go in with different expectations. Bandwagoning is a natural consequence of that, and it's always been happening on Facepunch.
It'll be solved once we get crowdfunded bans; you bet your ass I'm going to be the first one out the door since Tudd is gone. Hell I might crowdfund my own ban just out of spite (There's a few on newpunch who'd want me gone, won't give names.) I am curious how much impact it will have actually. I worry people will just ban eachother over petty shit.
Why would you be the first one gone? While I disagree with you quite often I can't recall any real issues with your posts off the top of my head. There's plenty of others who would come to mind before that. (Sgman, Chonch, and far too often Silence as well. And the issues with them is not their opinions but the utterly garbage way they "debate".)
Eh, a few people who dislike me gang together, cram all their coins into banning me just because they can. Imagine Sensationalist Headlines and Polidicks without my crazy articles. It won't be the same.
Allow optional 'disable ratings' when creating thread, make it default in certain forums, like Polidicks.
Just as bad as disabling ratings on your video on YouTube.
Isn't the current issue right now have something to do with biases caused by ratings? Besides, most people would only use disable ratings to protect themselves, the person starting the thread often have little to hide (other than an agenda).
Honestly just waiting for a short time or a threshold (whichever happens first) before showing ratings would fix all these problems. Maybe make coins/diamonds show up instantly, for QOL.
Why not make it so that you can't see ratings until you've rated it yourself, like how polls don't let you see the results until after you've voted.
I've previously suggested something similar for the same reason. My preference was to have ratings not show until you've rated instead. Some people suggested this would jsut lead to the page being refreshed and rerated but I doubt anyone would actually bother to do that.
Only problem I can think of with that is people spamming ratings so they can see.
This is why I have several 100+ member FP discords ready at my disposal to rate my posts. To make sure I have full Positive Rating Dominance or PRD.
I have at least 20 alts to rate myself at all times
Since this is only an issue in Sensationalist Headlines and Polidicks why not just disable ratings in those forums. Or bring back Star for them.
He did not agree with you.
He literally said "I have the same opinion"
He disagreed with your greater point, which was stupid scaremongering over facebook. His agreement was in the nature of patenting features away from competitors. He said you were a baby over the anti-facebook hyperbole. The point remains that you cannot handle the criticism of your poorly planned post, and would rather rally around the idea of post rating hiveminds.
Actually I don't care about the individual post whatsoever, why would I? I just thought it was a good example of the posting habit. You sure are assuming a lot.
i normally don't care about ratings but when someone changes their rating on my post from dumb to funny/agree or vice-versa (i've seen both happen) when they see theyre actually in the minority, i find that incredibly pathetic
I've never noticed that, is that a common occurrence?
i noticed people doing it once or twice on oldpunch, i only made a few hundred posts and i only ever noticed when i happened looking at the ticker, so i assume it happens quite a lot. it happened to me a couple of days ago too
People rate me dumb quite often, only for me to refresh the page and find they've changed their answer.. Usually to funny? not that I mind extra funny ratings, but damn the bandwagon effect is hardcore on facepunch. definitely hide ratings on a post until you've rated said post.
On oldpunch I would sometimes rate people dumb because it was right next to the quote button and I misclicked, partially due to my old mouse being shit and partially because I'm a moron. I usually changed the rating to to informative or optimistic.
i can sympathise with that but they don't reply to me, some people also go from funny to dumb
ratings are just Reply Lite™ but with predetermined replies, nothin' wrong with caring about them the same way you'd care about replies
