I really really REALLY want to try stellaris, but its obnoxious how much they nickle and dime their DLC. Like at this rate it feels like if XCOM 2 just separated the individual additions to their mega expansions while charging 10-15 bucks a feature.
Compared to their other games (which vastly outnumber Stellaris DLC wise) Stellaris really isn't that bad, honestly most of the DLC for Stellaris might as well be optional, it adds to the game, but the game itself is fine without them in it's current form, especially with all the free shit they add in updates.
That's Paradox for you, with Paradox games you can't do it like other games where you just wait for all the DLC to be released and then buy some All-DLC GOTY edition after a year for the same price as the original game on release, it's only going to get worse if you let the DLC pile up, you spend the same amount of money in the end but it's easier to pay 10 bucks per DLC release every 1-2 months than have to pay 100 bucks all at once when it's all piled up.
hence why i wont support their dlc bullshit. If battletech does the same with clans being baited with sectional DLC, i wont touch it with a 10 foot pole.
I'm still pissed off about what they did with armageddon
What happened? I've yet to try it.
my save got corrupted to hell and back, plus hyper lane seems to tedious to be fun.
This is not the kind of game you just play through once, losing a save isn't a big deal
I wish I could get a hang of the war stuff in stellaris, I love the whole idea but always end up finding myself out matched in terms of fleet power and get rekt hard.
You ain't a true Paradox player if you constantly start new games
i know but i grew attached to my current empire.
For anyone reading this thread who's interested in Stellaris, let me give you the quick "Don't buy it" pitch from someone with 200 hours in it. (Which, judging by my records, is about where I usually decide when a 4x/slow paced game is or isn't meant for my perennial replay shelf.) 1) The first 3 play-throughs will be like your next 3,000. -Stellaris has a wicked depth problem that still hasn't been addressed in spite of seeming attempts to pad out the end-game. Most choices are functionally cosmetic, and the mechanics do little to facilitate actual role-playing unless you're exhaustively imaginative. In the end this means that once you've checked off the top of your "what-if" list, you'll find that you've exhausted the body of playstyles and options. 2) Don't get attached to mechanics. The developer team behind Stellaris aren't shy about treating the game like it's an early-access title. They've already gutted, reworked or outright removed entire systems from the game. They've made it clear they intend to continue to do this. So at least if you're disappointed with the game you receive, six months from now you'll get a relatively new one when the next feature-patch drops. Speaking of feature-patches... 3) Bug Testing is for amateurs. The Stellaris team have a bad track record with testing or ironing out their releases ahead of time. Until a truly astonishing shit-show of actual gamebreaking proportions they didn't even both beta testing their version-level patches. Nothing I've seen or heard indicates to me that they intend to break from this trend. 4) DLC stands for Dimes Like Candy. As it's already been put in this thread, some Paradox titles are fairly benign when it comes to expansions and DLC. Others are malicious leeches that will paywall major systems and lead your wallet in to ruination if you give them the time of day. Stellaris falls in to the second category. 4b) DLC loses value over time. The devs have already started scooping content and features from past DLCs and putting them in to the present game, so enjoy a nice fuck you if you buy in early or on release, but a pleasant surprise if you don't. 5th and finally) Mods? You mean DLC. Stellaris has, in the past, shamelessly ripped off popular Steam Workshop mods, only to repackage the ideas and systems in to the game as DLC features, without giving the people who did the ground breaking and exploratory work so much as a nod. That really annoys me, frankly. So there you have it. I won't waste breath on whatever merits or virtues there might be in Stellaris, since it blows it's own stiffy with enough fortitude and skill to put a contortionist to shame. You can make up your mind on your own as a responsible adult.
Idk, I buy all the DLC to support Paradox making games that I otherwise wouldn't be able to get. And with the amount of time I dump into Stellaris I don't mind how much they change the mechanics, makes it interesting to jump back in.
I always look at Stellaris and come close to buying it, but something turns me off every time. All I'm looking for is a successor to Sins of a Solar Empire, though the minor engine update did breathe more life into that game.
Base game Stellaris is about as deep as a saltine cracker so unless you've got the cash for the DLCs and a sale goes on, keep holding off.
