https://www.facebook.com/nswpoliceforce/videos/10155896638086185/ NSW Police today unveiled the BMW 530d and Chrysler SRT Core [sic] as the replacement vehicles to the outgoing Traffic and Highway Patrol Command fleet vehicles, with Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy saying the latest addition is focused on safety and efficiency. Having used Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores as the main Traffic and Highway Patrol enforcement vehicles for decades, and with both manufacturers ceasing Australian production last year, the command undertook a global fleet review to identify vehicles best suited for Australian law enforcement purposes. Following an exhaustive and comprehensive three-year search, which included rigorous assessment and testing of 17 different variants of several vehicles, the BMW 530d and Chrysler SRT Core were chosen to replace Ford and Holden models from July 2018. “The safety of our police officers and the community they serve is our top priority, and both these vehicles demonstrated the safety levels meeting our requirements,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said. “Equally as important, the platform of both vehicles supports the state of the art technology that is key to the government’s focus on reducing the incidents of road trauma across New South Wales. The BMW and Dodge Chrysler [sic] brands provide NSW Police Force with a solid foundation to build on through years of experience in building law enforcement vehicles. Both vehicles are designed specifically for policing duties and similar models have performed as law enforcement vehicles across North America and Europe for years, and have an established presence in Australia, meaning support and further development will be accessible to the NSW Police Force. I wouldnt call a BMW "efficiency" if youre looking at the money side of things. Seems like overkill.
The 530d may have more re-sale value at the end of its career in the police, and it would use significantly less fuel than either of the outgoing models, so it may actually be rather affordable. Also, both cars would be acquired at government fleet prices.
Police here in Portugal, at least in the city, have been using BMWs for a while now.
Plus standard optionless bimmers are fucking cheap, most of the times
I'm all on board for the 300C, but the bimmer seems like a massive huge money sink with the maintenance.
Not here.
Everything's expensive in Australia anyway
If either of those cars are going to be a money sink, it’s going to be the Chrysler with its ghastly fuel consumption. 5.1L/100km combined fuel consumption for the BMW and 13L/100km combined fuel consumption for the Chrysler. Also, I don’t know if it would make much of a difference, but BMW is better-established in Australia and likely has a better service network, whereas Chrysler only came back to Australia a few years ago and I imagine their service network isn’t as well developed.
So they are literally telling us they cant use the Toyota Camry police cars that they have used for ever and are still in production? yeah right, this is just using that budget surplus so they don't lose it.
A BMW fleet seems like it would be a nightmare to maintain with BMW's scummy practices.
Interesting that they went with the 300C. I've only ever seen Chargers (and the rare Magnum) used as patrol cars.
BMWs have been used by European law enforcement for literally decades. If they are a nightmare, then why are they still being used?
i've been seeing Hyundai Tucsons in Vicpol colours driving around recently makes me feel ill
What really? I always thought that was something Need For Speed took liberties with, like the Corvette* and Lamborghini* police cruisers. * I know they have sports cars for PR use.
The diesels are perfectly fine as long as you give them the correct oil changes and such.
I know for a fact that some German and Swiss police use BMWs. BMWs are hardly as exotic as Corvettes or Lamborghinis; they are pretty regular cars here in Australia, as they are in Europe.
I'm wondering why they don't just use Chargers. Honestly, WRXs could do the job just fine and be wayyyy cheaper in all costs.
As mentioned literally a few posts above, Chargers aren’t exported to Australia. Not sure about Imprezas, but Mitsubishi Lancers are occasionally used as regular (not highway patrol) police cars here, and I know of at least one unmarked Evolution X police car. WRXs aren’t used probably because Subaru doesn’t make cop kits for the WRX, whereas BMW and Chrysler do make cop kits for their 530d and 300C. It’s rather idiotic that they chose to adopt the Chrysler alongside of the BMW though, given that the 300C has combined fuel consumption which is almost three times greater than the 530d.
Yeah, we some some here in sweden too. An mercedes benz ones
