Ala. lawmaker loses job offer at LGBTQ org. after suggesting governor is gay

A Florida LGBTQ nonprofit revoked a job offer for an Alabama state lawmaker after she suggested that the state’s governor is gay and should be outed.

Rep. Patricia Todd (D) is Alabama's first openly gay state lawmaker and was set to take a position as executive director of the One Orlando Alliance, an organization formed after the
2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Fla. The group retracted its offer after Todd made social media posts suggesting that Gov. Kay Ivey (R) is gay and should be outed, according
to AL.com.

“Will someone out her for God’s sake,” Todd wrote on Twitter. “I have heard for years that she is gay and moved her girlfriend out of her house when she became Gov. I am sick of
closeted elected officials.” Todd’s tweets are protected, but news outlets shared screenshots of the tweet. Todd sent the tweet after one of Ivey’s GOP gubernatorial challengers
criticized her for giving funding to an LGBTQ nonprofit, to which Ivey responded that she “certainly didn’t agree” with the organization’s values.

Jennifer Foster, the chairwoman of One Orlando Alliance’s board, said in a statement that Todd’s comments are “not aligned” with the group’s values.“We strongly believe that coming
out is a personal choice and we do not support involuntarily outing,” Foster said.

An official from QLatinx, one group involved in the alliance, told AL.com that Todd’s statements were “psychic and emotional violence” and amounted to “weaponizing queerness.”

“Weaponizing queerness through the act of outing others is a violation of the sacred rite that we as queer people undergo in our journey of self-discovery,” Christopher Cuevas said.
"When our humanity is violated in this way, how can we find space to begin healing in self and to promote the healing and growth of others?" 

Ivey’s campaign called the tweet a “disgusting lie being pushed by a paid liberal political hack.” Todd defended her comments to AL.com before the job offer was rescinded, reiterating
that she "hates hypocrites" and that she has long warned that she would expose gay politicians who act against LGBTQ rights.
