http://www.indiewire.com/2018/05/deadpool-2-125-million-marvel-box-office-fatigue-1201966548/ Is a $125-milllion opening weekend enough? Seems crazy to ask, but that’s what our Marvel-dominated world has come to. “Deadpool 2” had the third-biggest opening of 2018, and the third biggest opening for a Marvel film, after Disney’s “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War” (both over $200 million to start). “Deadpool 2” opened to over $300 million worldwide, and had a lower budget than many Marvel titles ($110 million, about double the 2016 original), so this should be a profitable title and then some. But it also shows the first signs of possible Marvel weariness, if only because the gross came in a little under expectations. The low range of pre-opening estimates was $130 million, with $150 million commonplace. Judging a film by predictions is not totally fair, but at this point Marvel films are expected to shock and awe. Still, it’s a soft debut. Why? Gross-depressing factors might include comedic sequels, the R rating films, and the absent surprise factor. Also, round one came on President’s Day weekend. It also could suggest that viewers aren’t as quick to see a variation on what they’ve seen in recent months. Figures from 20th Century Fox indicate that initial crowds were 61 percent male, which shows that a film with strong male appeal can still create a success. However, the disparity means the film missed the mark somewhat with women, who increasingly comprise 50 percent of the comic-book movie audience. And it had to cope with another hot Marvel film competing head to head. “Avengers: Infinity War” added more than $28 million  (now at $595 million domestic). “Deadpool” — and for that matter, “Black Panther” — had virtually no competition. “Deadpool” did take a bite out of “Infinity,” which dropped 54 percent. It is still on track to hit $675 million or more, but increasingly looks unlikely to top “Black Panther,” which is now just under $700 million (and now available in initial stages of home viewing). “Panther” fell to #13 and under $1 million for its first time. This was the third weekend of $200 million or more this year. To be determined is how the clot of Marvel titles and next weekend’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” will coexist. “Solo” should open to at least $100 million, but don’t be surprised if it is affected by the top-heavy line up.
That or its cause its a rated R film...
Could have to do with the fact that Infinity War overshadowed literally every other film this month, especially another Marvel film.
A, it's an R-rated movie, so it's never going to make as much money as the other Marvel movies, and B, comparing it to Black Panther and Infinity War is pretty useless since Black Panther attracted a crowd that lacks real representation in the MCU as far as a lead character goes, and Infinity War has the added benefit of attracting all of the MCU's fans. Deadpool is not MCU, it's just another X-Men movie.
Also it's weird because deadpool isn't directly handled by marvel. If Marvel Studios were making I doubt they would stack it so close to their other movies.
oh boohoo it only made 3 times its budget in a week. Ring the alarm, movies are dead. I don't go to the movies too often and I recently saw Black Panther and Avengers, so yeah of course I won't go watch another superhero movie just yet. Black Panther was a cultural phenomenon and IW is the culmination of 10 years of Marvel movies. Comparing DP2 to these 2 movies is ridiculous.
tbh its honestly a good sign that a big budget rated R movie is actually able to make this much in the box office. Hopefully this increases the amount of big budget rated R films. Though, probably wouldn't matter much cause of the decline of theaters and crap...
it might be a lot of money, BUTS ITS NOT ALL THE MONEY SO ITS A FAILURE. This thinking is what is killing Hollywood's creativity and AAA game studio's creativity too
It was a bad time to release it but it is hardly a flop.
Girlfriend and I are off to see it tomorrow, have literally been hearing nothing but good things about it. The rating and the fact that irreverent superhero comedy-action-thing is kind of a niche genre pretty much accounts for this, I'm actually baffled that they were expecting/demanding more, especially with Infinity War having just come out and despite having a darker tone than previous Marvel offerings, still being open to a wider audience than Deadpool 2 is.
Guy's, they weren't expecting it to make as much as Infinity War. It just didn't hit their expectations.
I think people are forgetting that deadpool 1 released on presidents day weekend, so since monday was a bank holiday more people could go for late night showings on sunday.
As suggested by people who clearly should have their brain taken away because it's being neglected.
When I went (Friday 8pm) it was a half empty theater.
Movie studies are moronic for releasing all movies in April/May and leaving summer mostly empty. Stupid that Disney would fight themselves with Solo+Infinity War, and even more so that Fox would too. Deadpool 2 would've been a great July release.
Comic book fatigue, in a year that already has seen fucking Black Panther become then ninth highest grossing movie of all time, and a third Avengers movie on track to potentially become the third highest grossing movie of all time. It's almost like people want this to be a thing, despite all evidence to the contrary.
Yeah its basically like eating the same food over and over. Its great, but it gets old. I already know people have Star Wars fatigue and don't plan to see Solo, Disney gonna shit its self when it finally happens.
I'm pretty sure the theater was more crowded during the premier of mother! than Deadpool 2 for me
Deadpool would still have to fight with Antman and the Wasp if it were released in July, however Deadpool would probably come out on top, unless I'm underestimating the amount of people that care about Antman.
I had no idea Deadpool was such a beloved IP. Granted, I couldn't care less about superhero movies and I was getting a bit tired of seeing promotional material for this film ("put a monster in your mouth" lol innuendo xD), so I'm clearly not in the target audience. Still, the fact that a superhero movie based on a relatively unknown character is able to take in 125 million dollars seems nuts.
2 of the 4 comic book movies in the top 10 best grossing films of all time came out within the past 3 months https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/110042/d23c61ed-b3e7-4a80-ac2b-06be812c5498/Screen Shot 2018-05-21 at 8.58.20 PM.png
I dont understand the superhero fatigue concept. Its not like superheroes are a genre, its just a vague character archetype. Logan, Deadpool, Winter Soldier, Homecoming are all superhero movies but vastly different from one another (Western, Comedy, Thriller, Coming-of-Age) for example. The problem is the Marvel Studios movies have had a kind of loosely consistent formula to them really.
People have been saying Superhero Fatigue is gonna set in soon since Iron Man 2 came out
which is why Guardians 1 and 2 are pretty much a breath of fresh air in the MCU.
Yeah, basically since the MCU officially became a thing, and picking up a lot just before the first Avengers came out, people (mostly critics and random dickheads trying to be social figureheads and hackfraud Youtube review channels) have been talking about this fatigue. They're of course neglecting the fact that the vast majority of people are just not like them at all and are not as discerning and critical and are in fact ok with this kind of thing. Even many of us who are conscious and a lot more discerning and critical still don't care because we can just sit down and enjoy them as entertainment. If its well executed, who cares how many times it has been done as long as it works as its own thing?
When I went Sunday it was full so.
Deadpool 2 is amazing but comparing it to IW or BP is fucking retarded. Seeing as IW and BP are both made by Marvel and Disney whereas DP and the Xmen movies are controlled by 20th Century Fox with only Marvel providing licensing should indicate that it's fine. 120m opening isn't a bad feat, whoever is screaming because they didn't make it past the billion threshold needs to get their head into check. If we start making movies to exceed box office expectations, we will literally lose the plot on everything. Deadpool has passion, humour and a fucking great cast, who cares what it makes. It's an R rated film and it's doing amazing for its classification
